ProPlan
ProPlan is one of the most affordable premium foods in the line. The product consists of approximately half protein components, which is very important for the health and activity of the pet. The downside is that a larger percentage of the proteins contained are of plant origin (corn, soy), rather than animal. They are used for manufacturing due to the low cost of raw materials. But corn gluten and soy flour, among others, can adversely affect the condition of the animal. For example, you may be allergic to these ingredients. The advantages include the content of natural chicken meat and offal, which are healthy. The food also contains prebiotics, which is important for healthy digestion. The ProPlan series of medicinal foods is of significantly higher quality and is recommended by many veterinarians. If the pet feels well and has no health problems, then the ProPlan line can be an ideal budget option.
Wet economy options
Felix
Price from 19 rub. per bag.
Food from Purina. The composition contains 4% meat components, vegetable protein extracts, an unknown amount of fish, unknown sugars, thickeners, vitamins.
Felix kitten food
Gourmet
Price – from 25 rub. per pouch package, from 35 rub. per jar.
Canned food from Nestlé Purina is produced in pouches and small portioned tin cans.
The composition of the product is almost identical to Felix, but the price is an order of magnitude higher, especially for canned pates. The owners note that kittens love spiders, but most likely this is due to the flavorings.
Gourmet kitten food
All Cats
Price – from 16 rub. per bag.
Contains 20% minced chicken, 4% meat by-products, an unspecified amount (less than 4%) of fish by-products, vegetable proteins, flaxseed oil. At this ratio, the food is liquid and smells very strongly of fish, which suggests the use of flavorings.
All Cats kitten food
Whiskas spiders
Price from 22 rub. per bag.
The ingredients on the bag are extremely difficult to read. Armed with a magnifying glass, you can make out that the food consists of 45% meat and offal (chicken min. 4%), the manufacturer has classified the rest of the proportions, indicating vegetable oil, cereals, antioxidants, taurine, vitamins, and minerals.
kitten food Whiskas spiders
Sheba
Pouch price – from 38 rubles.
Wet food for kittens Sheba, from Mars. Manufacturers produce entire collections of Sheba flavors with attractive names, positioning their foods as premium.
But the composition of the spiders is no different from the bags of economy options. The same base of offal, unclear ratio of grains and flavoring additives.

Veterinarians' opinions on review representatives
Veterinarians speak quite unequivocally about the comparison of the quality of the two foods. In their opinion, they are both at the same level of quality, and are also objectively overrated and do not deserve super premium status due to the nuances of the composition (meat by-products, dyes, preservatives and flavor enhancers). Reviews show that they are recommended equally often for feeding healthy puppies or adult dogs.
For the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, ProPlan is considered preferable. It has a narrower range, but maintaining specifications according to the disease and size of the animal increases the effectiveness of veterinary products. The same applies to nutrition for pets with other diseases: ProPlan Urinari and Royal Canin Urinari are often sold together, but professionals recommend the former.

Brit Premium
Brit Premium is a premium product line. The food has a well-balanced composition and is suitable for daily feeding. The product is manufactured in the Czech Republic, which can guarantee European quality control. The disadvantages include the presence of cheaper ingredients than in super premium food from the same company – Brit Care. Brit Premium, unlike higher grades, contains artificial colors and flavors. Also, these foods are not available in every pet store. The advantage of this line is its wide range: you can choose the right food for even the most picky pet at an affordable price.
Characteristic differences
It is known that in the natural environment the basis of a cat’s diet is animal protein, therefore, at home, a pet should not experience a lack of it.
According to the manufacturers, the products contain up to 40% protein ingredients, however, in Hill's food it is mainly vegetable protein.
However, in terms of the composition of offal, breeders and veterinarians have more complaints about the ProPlan brand, since in addition to ground bones, it adds liver and animal fat of dubious origin, which is harmful for the pet.
Unlike the daily feeding diets offered by Hill's, Proplan products contain soy and cellulose powder as filler, which can cause allergic reactions in cats. Therefore, when choosing a permanent balanced food, it is necessary to consult an experienced veterinarian.
In addition, the manufacturer Hill's initially specialized in the development of therapeutic and preventive foods, while the Proplan product line is more focused on absolutely healthy cats.
Royal Canin
Royal Canin is a premium balanced food for cats. It can be a good replacement for natural food, as it contains all the necessary nutrients for a pet. The disadvantages of Royal Canin include the presence of various types of chemicals: dyes, preservatives, flavor enhancers, etc. The line of medicinal food from this company is of higher quality. But if your pet tolerates this type of food well, then you can stop with it. It wins among food in its class with relatively good quality, price and availability in any pet store. But since Royal Canin production has been established in Russia, its quality has dropped significantly, so it is best to order European-made food, if possible.
General conclusion
more honest with customers. Vague formulations are less common in the list of components of these diets. However, it is still difficult to call food quality. Although meat ingredients come first, their relative share in the dry residue is small. The indicators are brought to normal levels by adding poultry protein. Even the food with rice, which is most often purchased by owners of pets with allergies, contains wheat, corn and gluten, which is not very good for consumers.
In the case of Royal Canin products, a more ambiguous picture is observed. The first places in the composition are usually dehydrated proteins of animal origin. The exact source of their production is not indicated, so one can only guess what the manufacturer uses: muscle tissue or offal with almost zero nutritional value. In any case, the use of isolated protein in place of whole meat in everyday foods is discouraged. In addition, the composition includes plant proteins, i.e. there are not enough animal amino acids to create an attractive balance.
Both manufacturers use questionable ingredients: sugars, flavorings without specifying their origin, yeast, etc. Purina Corporation includes propylene glycol in its dog food. It is officially recognized as safe, but it is prohibited from being added to cat foods, which is alarming. It is possible that negative reactions may occur with prolonged use and accumulation of the substance in the body. Propylene glycol is used primarily as a flavoring agent, so the manufacturer could avoid using it.
The quality of feed is determined by its composition. Royal Canin and ProPlan have long ceased to be quality foods, since most of the income is spent on advertising and promotion. Plus, there is nothing natural in the composition - proteins of animal origin, it doesn’t even say what animal these proteins were taken from. This makes it difficult to pick a favorite. Corn, soybeans, wheat - those grains that are not digestible by animals are present in large quantities in these feeds. And almost all of these cereals are excreted from the body along with feces, without being absorbed one bit.

Trust in the manufacturer
Many Russian nurseries and veterinarians do not trust domestic products, as well as companies that produce their food in local factories and according to local standards. This feature of the perception of dog diet plays into the hands of both brands: Royal Canin and ProPlan are produced outside the country or here, but using Western technologies.
Pro Plan is created by the American monopolist in the field of animal nutrition Purina, with factories located in France, Italy and Russia. And Royal Canin is made by a French company. Factories for the production of both dog and cat food are located in Poland, Russia and France. A comparison of Royal Canin and ProPlan by place of production shows that they are in equal positions. The reputation in the media and according to reviews of both companies is also approximately the same.
Hills
Hills belongs to the premium class and has a good composition. It contains poultry meal, or meat, fish oil, vitamin and mineral supplements - everything that is necessary for complete nutrition. The downside of all premium food, including Hills, is the presence of various types of chemicals. In addition, Hills contains a high amount of carbohydrates, which is not very good for a cat’s digestion. The series of medicinal feeds from this company is of the highest quality and belongs to a higher class. But if your pet does not suffer from any disease, veterinarians advise to refrain from feeding the medicinal line of food. The advantages of the product include availability in stores, low price and a vitamin complex in the composition.
“Elite in a bowl” or “Everything is sad”? Find out your brand's rating according to CPP!
We studied dry food from 100 different brands, focusing not on the manufacturers' marketing messages on the packaging, but only on the list of ingredients in the composition.
As a result, it turned out that many foods that manufacturers and sellers classify as “superpremium”, “holistic”, “ultrapremium” are not leaders in the PPC rating.
In order to clearly show this to you, we have divided all brands into five categories:
- "Elite in a Bowl" (average score from 41 to 55);
- “B plus” (average score from 31 to 40);

- “It could have been better” (average score from 11 to 20);
- “Everything is sad” (average score from 1 to 10).
The average score for each brand was derived based on a study of the compositions of those specific dry foods that we processed based on user requests in 2022. Price difference
Most often, buyers are interested in market prices for feed and wonder whether ProPlan or Royal Canin is more expensive. And this is not surprising - most often they are overpriced and differ from the average in this segment.
ProPlan | Royal Canin |
A package of dry food from ProPlan without discounts and promotions will cost 4,500-5,000 rubles per 10 kg, depending on the region of purchase and its distance from the factory. | The price of Royal Canin is slightly higher, but the difference is not that great. 10 kilograms of dry food can be bought for 4800-5200 rubles. The exact cost also depends on the policy of the pet store and the distance between the point of sale and the Royal Canin plant. |
The veterinary diet from ProPlan, which takes into account the nuances of health, is more expensive. The price of medicinal dry food weighing three kilograms starts from 2390 rubles. | Royal Canin medicinal food can only be ordered through veterinary clinics or nurseries. It is sold in packages of 80 grams or 3.5 kilograms. The price is rarely lower than 1990 rubles for the second packaging option. But a discount is possible if the seller cooperates with the company. |
A package of pouch-shaped treats weighing 150 grams will cost the buyer 290 rubles. When purchasing offline, this price can rise to 350 rubles. | The brand does not have treats as such, but can be compared to pates for small breeds. One pack weighing 85 grams will cost about 58 rubles. Accordingly, the brand wins in the price of additional food. |

The most famous cat foods, their pros and cons, price category
Most cat owners try to choose food that is of high quality and not too expensive. It is important to consider that some animals require special nutrition due to their age or the presence of certain health problems. In this case, it is necessary to select a special food that can support the cat’s body.
Hills
The manufacturer offers a wide variety of dry and wet food, taking into account the cat’s age, lifestyle, and special needs. Hills food includes ready-made food for babies, young, adult and elderly animals. In addition, the manufacturer has created separate lines for pregnant and sterilized cats, neutered cats.
For pets leading a sedentary lifestyle, the Weight management series is provided. This food not only supplies the animal’s body with all the necessary substances, but also prevents obesity.
For cats with health problems, food with a special composition has been developed. Hiils offers separate lines aimed at maintaining the health of the kidneys, liver, urinary tract, and skin. Among the food of this brand you can find food for cats with allergies and diabetes. Advantages of Hills food:
- balance of price and quality;
- availability of artificial nutrition for babies;
- a wide range of food for cats with special needs;
- the presence of a product that helps remove hairballs from the gastrointestinal tract.
The cost of a 1.5 kg package of Hills is 1000-1200 rubles. The price of a package weighing 2 kg is from 1200 to 1900 rubles. (depending on the composition, food for cats with health problems is more expensive). There are also mini-packages weighing 300-400 g (price - from 230 to 450 rubles), 4 kg (about 2700 rubles), 5 kg (about 3500 rubles), 8 kg (4600 rubles), 10 kg ( 5500 rub.), 15 kg (8250 rub.).
Royal Canin

The manufacturer has developed food for pregnant and neutered animals, for cats with health problems, excess weight, and allergies. A special feature of Royal Canin is the availability of lines for representatives of various breeds. Royal Canin benefits include:

Arden Grange
Arden Grange is a super premium range of pet products. It is popular in European countries, as it is one of the highest quality in its class. The food does not contain artificial colors, enhancers and other chemicals that help the animal become accustomed to the food. Arden Grange consists only of natural and well-balanced ingredients, and also contains enzymes and prebiotics that promote better absorption of the product. Its quality is confirmed by European quality control and positive reviews from many veterinarians. In terms of quality, this line is close to the holistic class, which is also evidenced by the relatively high price of Arden Grange.
Monge
15
A bag of dry food weighing 0.4 kg costs over 250 rubles.
The Italian brand Monge has been producing cat food for over 50 years. The idea for such a business came to the owner of a small enterprise that procured chicken meat for restaurants - they simply had nowhere to put the production waste. As a result, over the years, feed production has become the main activity.
The main advantage of the recipe is its maximum similarity to the natural diet of cats. The basis of nutrition is meat, and additional ingredients include vitamins E, carbohydrates of plant origin and fiber. Breeders who care about the health of their pets quickly appreciated the natural composition of Monji's products, which ensured its popularity throughout the world.
Today, belonging to the super-premium class is based on a perfectly balanced and safe composition and variety of lines. Under the Monji brand they produce:
Comparison of the quality of the composition of two brands
When figuring out which of the two brands is of better quality and preferable for purchase, you need to pay attention to the composition. Both companies have different lines, but one problem repeats itself: the quality of the main component leaves much to be desired.
ProPlan | Royal Canin |
Meat takes first place when listing the components of ProPlan. The company uses chicken, salmon, beef, lamb or even turkey. But along with pure fillet, by-products (skins, ground bones and other harmful ingredients) can be added to the feed. | The Royal Canin company most often bases its diets on chicken meat. There are varieties of food with red meat (for example, beef, pork or veal). Criticism of the food is related precisely to the quality of the product: it is subjected to serious chemical processing. |
ProPlan uses wheat, rice or corn as a source of protein and amino acids important for dogs. But their location in the list of food ingredients indicates that there are too many plant components. | The source of complex carbohydrates is considered to be brewer's rice grains, whole grain rice, and corn. All of them are cheap and low quality components that serve as filler for the dog’s stomach. |
According to veterinarians, additional sources of protein are also not of high quality. In ProPlan they are dehydrated chicken proteins, which can cause side effects, including allergies. | Royal Canin adds chicken fat with concentrated Omega-6 acid or beet pulp to the feed. Alternative protein sources include wheat gluten, corn flour and fructooligosaccharides. |
Purina ProPlan uses controversial ingredients that can cause addiction in dogs. This significantly complicates a potential transition to a new food. | The company uses flavor enhancers, dyes, and flavors that attract animals. |
1st Choice
1st Choice is a super premium food made in Canada. 1st Choice has a high-quality and balanced composition. It consists of one third animal protein, which is optimal for a healthy diet. The food contains dietary poultry meat, as well as chicken eggs and fish oil, which are sources of amino acids necessary for a balanced diet. The composition contains only natural flavors that promote better pet appetite. The 1st Choice line also contains hypoallergenic food, which is recommended by experts for the treatment of allergies in pets.
Proplan from Purina
Thanks to collaboration with veterinarians and nutritionists, Purina Corporation specialists were able to develop three areas of food production and offer cat owners:
- Products produced in the form of dry granules.
- Canned foods.
- Dietary rations with a therapeutic effect.
The manufacturer has tried to create unique complexes where combinations of ingredients help maintain the health of the pet and slow down the aging process.
The following additives are included in the diet:
- Optistart is intended for kittens, as it is able to support the functionality of the intestines and affect its microflora.
- Optirenal helps optimize kidney function in adults and animals that have undergone castration.
- Longevis, containing antioxidants and prebiotics, increases the vitality of cats over seven years of age,
They are original developments patented by the company.
Therefore, the owner of an animal, when choosing ProPlan dry food for his pet, does not have to worry about the variety of the diet and the inclusion of any additions to it.
The manufacturer claims a fairly high content of protein components in the feed. However, it should be borne in mind that approximately half of them are proteins of plant origin.
The sources of carbohydrates in Purina ProPlan are:
- Wheat.
- Rice.
- Corn.
- Wheat and corn gluten.
Dry food of this brand includes animal and fish oil, as well as several natural additives, for example:
- Chicory helps strengthen the animal's immunity and stabilize blood sugar levels.
- Yeast that helps improve metabolism in a cat's body.
which, given the wide range of products offered by the brand and based on the recommendations of a veterinarian, makes it possible to provide the pet with proper nutrition.
Variety of food lines
To understand which dog food is better: Royal Canin or ProPlan, you need to compare the composition of the product lines of both companies. This comparison allows you to understand whether the range includes products for a particular dog.
ProPlan | Royal Canin |
ProPlan offers high-quality dry food for puppies of medium, small and large breeds. The main differences in this diet are the amount of meat components per kilogram of food. | The line includes a diet for puppies up to one year old. Typically, food of this type is sold in individual packs of up to five kilograms in weight; spiders imported from other countries are a little less common. |
Foods for adult dogs of a specific breed from ProPlan are divided not according to the condition of the animal, but according to taste. For example, there is food for Labrador with beef, lamb or chicken. | There is a standard diet for adults. It contains an increased concentration of protein, which allows you to build and strengthen body muscles, control the weight and health of the animal. |
The most famous line for mature animals is Adult 7+ with the OPTIAGE complex. According to company representatives, it gives the dog all the necessary minerals and vitamins. | The brand offers dietary food for older animals or overweight dogs. It is worth noting that he has a good reputation among veterinarians and professional breeders. |
ProPlan presents specialized food for dogs on the Russian market that need to improve their digestive system, physical development and growth. | The company was developing additional types of food for adult dogs. They differ based on health characteristics (condition of teeth, coat), as well as the character of the dog (for gourmets, for active dogs). |

Anastasia:feeding dry food in our country is poisoning animals... They do nasty things for people, but for animals there is no control, the cost is enormous and there is no meat, don’t flatter yourself…. you will feed with dry food and oncology and planted liver and skin diseases are guaranteed... ideal for a dog, you can add meat and porridge and vegetables... I bought trimmings from a beef head or a very well cleaned stomach or offal, cut it into portions, put the portion in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer... then everything is simple, put the cereal in a pan of boiling water and take the preparation from the freezer and the porridge is ready, and if the meat has been frozen for a long time, defrost it in the microwave and serve it half-raw….
Unnamed: I prefer Orijen food.
Susie Roxy: none
Olga Maltseva: straight is better)
L.l: I feed the dog Pro pack, it’s already 4 years of her life.. she’s 6 years old now. good appearance and well-being. and the cat eats Hills. and I think Akana and Orijen are the best. For each dog, food is selected individually!!!
Marisa:PRO PLAN. but still, dry food should be fed rarely and used only for training.
She-Wolf: Orijen, Akana, Purina about the plan
KHATUL MADAN: Orijen, akana, about plan, ekanuba, heals, royal, about pack in this order
Irisha***:akana, bosh
Marika:akana and orijen are not suitable for everyone. Animals often develop liver problems 6-10 months after feeding it. and the best one is the one that suits your dog. In terms of naturalness, holistic needle pack and bosch are considered the best.
POTAPOVA LYUBOV: Hills, Proplan, Ekanuba are good feeds. I was allergic to Royal Canina; she categorically refused to eat Proplan and Ekanubu. Hills is still eating. In general, look at the appearance and behavior of the dog - the coat is shiny, the dog is active, cheerful - this means the food is suitable.
ANNAbiosis: Of the above - Hills. In general, I like Orijen the most in terms of composition. My dog eats Pro Plan.
Dr. Shu: Exactly from the ones you listed - Eucanuba (by the way, it reads “Yukanuba”) and Pro Plan. In general, any grain-free food.
Inga: I feed my dogs, puppies, and cats with Advance. I am very pleased with the condition of the animals and they eat with gusto.
Olya Kargapolova: They are all good. But our dog is allergic to Proplan, Orijen, Akana, EaglePak - the granules there are large (and she is small (York 1kg 800g), so now she is on Royal Canin - it suits her best (no allergies, small granules, eats well)
Nadezhda Shuklina: Royal Canin approached us.
Mikhail Prokhorov: Much has certainly changed since the publication of your question. Acana is the best food now, you can also read it in detail here
Bosch SANABELLE
Bosch SANABELLE is one of the best super premium food of German quality. This product line contains only natural ingredients and no artificial flavor enhancers. It is optimally balanced and consists of almost one third animal protein. In addition, it contains fish oil and a mineral complex, which are vital for an animal living at home. There are also natural additives that contribute to the normal functioning of the digestive system. The food contains a small amount of cellulose, which can cause allergies in cats. But the risk of an allergic reaction, experts say, is very small, so this food may be quite suitable for your pet. Bosch SANABELLE can be found on the shelves of many pet stores, but it has a relatively high price.
What is preferable to feed a cat - industrial food or natural food?
Cats can be fed both natural products and prepared food. If the owner chooses the first option, it is necessary to create a competent diet that includes all the necessary products. In addition, your pet will have to periodically buy vitamin and mineral complexes.
The basis of a cat’s natural diet should be the following products:
- lean meat (boiled or scalded with boiling water);
- rice, buckwheat porridge;
- raw and boiled vegetables (carrots, zucchini, cucumber, cabbage);
- fermented milk products (kefir, fermented baked milk, yogurt);
- sea fish (once a week instead of meat);
