ROYAL CANIN cat food, reviews from customers and veterinarians

Feed overview

Now Royal Canin is one of the most popular pet foods.
Since 2004, the food has been produced in Russia (Moscow region) by Mars Incorporated, which produces such foods as Cesar, Pedigree, Whiskas, Perfect Fit, KiteKat, Sheba and Eukanuba. The company develops regular daily diets and specialized medicinal diets for cats. The company also produces Royal Canin dog food. For information about the food, visit the manufacturer’s official website www.royal-canin.ru. Despite the fact that Royal Canin brand food is positioned as super-premium food, in our opinion, it can be classified as a premium class.

Royal Canin is the only cat food brand that has a wide variety of breed-specific diets. When developing each line, experts took into account all the nuances of the physiological structure of the representatives of the breed. The shape of the granules in each food is different, because... the anatomical structure of the jaw and teeth may differ slightly.

Advantages and disadvantages of Royal Canin cat food

A wide variety of lines of dry food. Food can be found in any pet store. Various forms of wet food. There are specialized diets for both dry and wet diets.

The main source of animal protein in almost all diets is dehydrated poultry protein. The manufacturer does not indicate which parts of the carcass are used in the manufacture of both dry and wet food. This can be powder from bones, feathers and other processed products. It also contains hydrolyzed proteins of animal origin - chemically treated parts of the carcass or processed products (feathers, bones, hooves). Dry diets contain quite a lot of plant components (including corn and wheat), which are not nutritionally valuable ingredients for cats. Dry formulas contain unknown preservatives and antioxidants. In wet diets, the manufacturer does not even indicate what type of meat and offal is used.

What to feed a kitten from four to twelve months

After four months, the pet’s diet should, as always, be balanced, rich in important microelements and substances, which in ready-made food are calculated depending on the age and needs of the pet. At the same time, the feeding schedule may change, since cats tend to eat several times a day. It is very important here to control the daily food intake so that the kitten does not overeat. Otherwise, there is a high risk of gaining excess weight, which carries with it a number of diseases in the future. That is why it is recommended to divide the daily intake into several servings.

Owner reviews of Royal Canin kitten food

Dmitry Kostyuk, the happy owner of a cat from the nursery, left the following review: “We give our fidgety wet food Royal Canin Kitten Instinctive in Gravy. The baby eats it like a vacuum cleaner. The composition is balanced, designed to meet the needs of an organism that is growing, and this is very important. The size of the pieces is convenient for chewing with a small jaw. The stomach works well, there are no allergies, the kitten is healthy and active. We’re glad we didn’t make a mistake with our choice.”

Having tried different types of food, Mashan eats Kitten Sterilized. My cat really likes this diet and he eats every last bite. We will definitely remain loyal to Royal Canin!”

Food for sterilized animals

This is the most problematic category, since this procedure greatly changes the metabolism, which affects the health of your pet. An excellent choice would be Royal Canin for neutered cats. What to feed kittens

When a small cat appears in the house, most owners have a question about what to feed their pet: ready-made diets or homemade food. In this case, industrial feed will be a convenient solution. They contain vitamins, microelements and easily digestible protein necessary for full development.

In addition, during the growth period the animal needs more energy than in adulthood. He needs a sufficient amount of amino acids, calcium, phosphorus and other trace elements. Some pet owners believe that homemade food will better meet their kittens' needs. It is important to remember that such nutrition is very difficult to balance at home without sufficient specialized knowledge. Therefore, if you decide to create a diet based on homemade food, you must first consult with a veterinary nutritionist.

What to feed a kitten from one to four months

From about 3-4 weeks, the kitten can begin to be given solid food. He may also start tasting it himself from the cat's bowl. From 6 weeks he is completely ready to feed himself.

Royal Canin Mother & Babycat Ultra Soft Mousse

The light and delicate mousse is suitable for feeding during the first growth phase, that is, from 1 to 4 months. Due to the mousse texture, the kitten can easily eat the entire portion.

Product Features:

  • Helps support the immune system during growth
  • the aroma profile corresponds to the instinctively preferred by the pet

Dry food Royal Canin Mother & Babycat

Dry food that can be soaked will help quickly and easily transition your pet from mother's milk to more adult food. At about 4 weeks of age, the kitten becomes more active, it grows sharp claws and teeth, so it can injure its mother during feeding.

Mazer & Babycat food will help the kitten quickly adapt to solid food. The croquette has a specially designed texture, due to which, upon contact with water, it is soaked until it becomes a paste. The croquette is easily grabbed and chewed.

Product Features:

  • antioxidant complex with vitamin E supports the immune system during development
  • prebiotics (FOS) are necessary for the balance of healthy intestinal microflora, which helps ensure normal digestion, highly digestible protein is important during the growth period for both development and normal digestion
  • DHA, which is extremely necessary in the first phase, takes part in the development of the nervous system, namely the brain

Description and composition

Royal Canin for small breed dogs: for puppies and adults

Cats suffering from urolithiasis are only given a special diet. They cannot be fed natural food or any other food. Urinary S/O medicated food for cats, developed by Royal Canin specialists, is able to control the acidity of pets’ urine and prevent the formation of stones.

For reference! Groups of outstanding scientists and veterinarians have been working on the creation of this food for many years.

Royal Canin S/O for cats dissolves struvite, oxalates and other crystals, and also normalizes the volume and density of urine. Due to the high content of glycosaminoglycans in food, the walls of the bladder are protected from harmful substances. The acid-base balance shifts slightly towards oxidation.

The intake of certain minerals into the body is reduced, primarily phosphorus, magnesium, ammonium, calcium, vitamin D, and oxalic acid. Urinari food for cats contains a slightly increased amount of table salt. This is necessary so that the cat drinks more water, then harmful substances will be removed from the body faster. The protein content in the Urinari special feed is strictly controlled: its excessive amount increases the level of ammonium.

Royal Canin Urinari lines:

  • Royal Canin Urinary Care - dry and wet Royal Canin Urinary Care is intended for cats at high risk of ICD.
  • Royal Canin Urinary S/O High Dilution 34 - wet and dry Royal Canin Urinary S/O High Dilution 34.
  • Royal Canin Urinary S/O LP34 - for treatment and prevention.
  • Royal Canin Urinary S/O Moderate Calorie is a food with moderate energy value for spayed and neutered pets, as well as for cats prone to obesity.

Important! The cat must have a cup of clean, fresh, drinking water. You need to change the water 2 times a day

Special nutrition prevents the formation of stones, regulates the acidity and density of urine

A friend of mine was given a kitten a year ago. His eyes were already open, but judging by the way his tummy touched the floor, it was clear that the baby was not even a month old. Some kittens, of course, already eat at this age, but this little one did not eat anything. The new guardians were afraid to pour cow's milk into him with a pipette. The veterinarian advised me to buy special milk for kittens (like baby formula). It turned out that a similar product is produced under the Royal Canin brand.

Does Royal Canin have cat treats?

Every owner wants to pamper their pet with “goodies”

What a treat is for a cat is known only to the cat itself. It is impossible to predict which product she will perceive as “delicious.” But the owner’s participation also plays a big role in choosing such a treat. My cat eats natural food, so we have wet food as a treat. The cat eats it with appetite (and it is safer than her beloved candies). Although my Hosya will not refuse canned peas, a glass of ice cream (the cat eats it, standing on her hind legs, holding the glass itself with her two front paws), and even green onions.

In fact, a cat treat is considered a special product that combines 2 functions at once:

  • the cat should like the treat, it should cause appetite, etc.;
  • the treat should be healthy and low-calorie (its consumption should not lead to overeating).

Royal Canin produces treats for pets in the form of bones made from compressed sinews. Such a treat satisfies the pet’s need to chew something, cleanses teeth of tartar and plaque, and also freshens breath. But, unfortunately, at the moment this product is only available for dogs. Therefore, as a “yummy” you can choose some delicious jelly from the same manufacturer.

Food for newborn kittens

There are situations when a kitten has to replace its mother, feeding it on its own. This happens when the cat is not nearby for some reason or does not have milk. Sometimes too many kittens are born and not all reach the mother's nipples.

A lifesaver in such cases is the Royal Canin Babycat Milk product. This is a substitute for natural cat's milk, which can be used as both a complete nutrition and an additional one. Its composition is completely balanced and helps provide the kitten with all the necessary substances.

The content of lactose and fructo-oligosaccharides in this food helps to reliably protect the baby’s fragile digestive system. These substances also normalize the intestinal microflora, preventing the development of pathogenic bacteria.

The presence of EPA and DHA fatty acids makes the mixture as close as possible to cat milk, and special aromatic additives make it attractive to kittens. The coconut oil contained in this food helps strengthen the immune system and maintain normal cholesterol levels in the blood.

What not to give to a kitten

Some owners, in addition to the chosen nutrition program, decide to additionally feed their pet or often treat it with food from their table. But digestion in cats is different from that of humans, and a number of seemingly ordinary foods can cause not only mild illness, but also serious damage to organs.

  • Raw eggs contain avidin, which can interfere with the absorption of biotin, which is one of the B vitamins.
  • Chocolate is harmful due to theobromine it contains. Heart rhythm disturbances, tremors, convulsions, and sometimes death - these are the possible consequences of chocolate eaten by a cat.
  • Onions and garlic can provoke the development of anemia, since these products can destroy red blood cells in the animal's blood.
  • Milk can cause digestive upset, since after 6 months the body of most kittens stops producing the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose.

General information and indications for use

So, Royal Canin Renal food is considered an indispensable product for cats that suffer from kidney problems. Having studied the description of this food in detail, you can find that it must be used in the following cases:

  1. Chronic renal failure.
  2. Prevention of relapses of urolithiasis.
  3. Prevention of recurrence of calcium oxalate stones.

As it becomes clear from the main indications for use, Royal Canin Renal cat food can be given to your pet only after consultation with a qualified specialist. However, do not underestimate your own role in this situation. Although only a doctor can make a diagnosis, your job is to get your cat to the doctor on time. That is why you need to carefully monitor the condition of your pet and its health, and as soon as you notice a change in condition, you need to immediately take the cat to the veterinarian.

It is worth mentioning here that the main signs of kidney problems in cats are lack of appetite, passivity and uncontrolled urination.

So, any of these symptoms should be a wake-up call for you, forcing you to pay closer attention to your pet and its state of health

Conclusions about Royal Canin food

Royal Canin food is positioned as high-quality elite nutrition. However, if there are no special complaints about the medical line, then the usual range has a number of disadvantages. They are much better than most foods, although they are not much different in price, but they are far from super-premium quality.

Raising and feeding a pet is an important part of an animal’s life. For a balanced diet, it is necessary to select the necessary products, prepare and add vitamins to the food that are required for the growth and development of a cat. The Royal Canin company has taken care of everything, developing and producing all kinds of food that are suitable even for picky pets.

Conclusion on Royal Canin dry and wet food

The current composition of Royal Canin is similar to economy. Lots of grains, no percentage of ingredients, no additional instructions such as what kind of rice was used, etc. For example, let’s compare the compositions of Royal Canina and good holistic dry food GO! (we compare it with it, since it has the same price per kg as Royal Canin, from 500 to 700 rubles, unlike other holistic brands, such as Akana or Orijen).

GO! FIT + FREE Grain-free for Kittens and Cats 4 types of Meat: Chicken, Turkey, Duck and Salmon Royal Canin FIT 32*

Of the minuses, it is worth mentioning potatoes in 11th place. However, it is not one of the first 5 ingredients and therefore will not harm your cat.

So, in the first place comes dehydrated proteins of animal origin, this phrase does not allow us to understand what exactly the component is made of, it could be feathers, offal, in general, anything that a bird has (it could be a pigeon). If you look at the first ingredient in GO! The manufacturer specifies that this is chicken meat.

In second place is wheat, which means that there is about 50% of it in the feed, maybe less, maybe more, we don’t know, because the manufacturer doesn’t specify this. What you need to know about wheat? It is a cheap source of carbohydrates and vegetable protein. Gluten (wheat protein) is a common cause of allergies in cats and is difficult to digest, and the carbohydrates in wheat cause obesity, diabetes and other problems.

In sixth place is flour from grain crops, this is an even more undesirable ingredient than wheat, all the same problems + incomprehensible quality, composition, in general, waste from flour mills.

Rice, which comes in third place, is not as bad as cereals, but its quality is unknown, maybe it’s leftovers swept from the floor. There is little useful in this. We have discussed only the main ingredients; there are also other undesirable ones, animal proteins, soybean oil, etc.

Line by breed

There is a line designed for certain breeds of cats (Persian, British Shorthair and others). According to the manufacturer, each of them has its own individual characteristics, the necessary substances are selected optimally for the breed, and the food is adapted to the size and structure of the pet’s jaws. But we doubt it, again we rely on the composition. The line includes products for:

Bengals;

Persians;

Maine Coons;

Siamese;

Siberian;

sphinxes;

British and other popular shorthaired, semi-longhaired, longhaired breeds.

Let's look at the composition using the example of food for everyone's favorite Maine Coons, screenshot from the official website.

Again, animal proteins of unknown quality, rice, grain flour, vegetable proteins. Perhaps the ingredients in the last places are selected for Maine Coon, but in the first places they are still the same as in all other Royal Canin foods. Our pets do not need all these components.

Healthy Ingredients

Yeast and fermentation by-products (of unknown origin) were probably added to the diet as a source of B vitamins. Their quality cannot be assessed. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are beneficial prebiotics that normalize the balance of beneficial and harmful intestinal bacteria.

Marigold erecta extract (source of lutein) – includes lutein (plant pigment beneficial for vision) and bioflavonoids (powerful natural antioxidants).

This food contains, among other things, a variety of vitamin and mineral supplements. They are necessary partly due to the lack of minerals and vitamins in the raw materials, partly due to the peculiarities of the technological process for the production of dry food (this is the industry norm, and therefore is not a direct indicator of high or low quality of the diet).

The diet also contains preservatives - antioxidants, but it is not known whether they are natural or artificial.
