Characteristics of a Savannah cat - character and behavior
Despite the fact that the Savannah was bred as a domestic cat, the effect of the genes of its African relative remains quite strong. Only a person with a strong character can become a good owner for her. You will have to show a certain toughness towards your pet so that he recognizes the unquestioned authority of a person. Otherwise, the semi-wild cat will put itself in the place of the leader, and will assign the role of subordinates to the owner and all family members.
Savannah F1 and F2 Photo: @f1savannah_gatsby/Instagram
The most difficult to maintain are individuals of the hybrid group F1. These include direct descendants of the serval, whose blood contains 50% of the blood of this wild ancestor. Savannah F1 is distinguished by the most striking external characteristics of a wild cat (large body, bright contrasting color) and independent character.
Savannah F3 Photo: @savannahcatbrothers/Instagram
Cats of the hybrid groups F2 (29% Serval blood) and F3 (13%) have a softer disposition. They are smaller in stature, and their eyes lack that predatory sparkle that distinguishes the wild inhabitant of the savannah.
Savannah F4 Photo: @jaguar_cartier_savannahsbt/Instagram
Cats of the hybrid groups F4 and F5 are completely domesticated and are distinguished by the most affectionate and flexible character. They are recommended for families with children. These cats are patient, intelligent, affectionate, and more adapted to life next to humans. They are distinguished by their emotionality and constantly communicate with their owners, using a whole arsenal of emotionally charged sounds.
Savannah F5 Photo: @worldoftarzan/Instagram
Since the Savannah's blood contains a certain percentage of the blood of an animal with a wild, unbridled disposition, she needs skillful education and socialization.
Proper upbringing of a cat should begin with instilling basic concepts, without which life around it will be full of problems. The kitten is strictly prohibited from doing a number of unacceptable things, for example, jumping on arms and legs, scratching walls and furniture. If you do not cut off an already formed habit in time, then over time it will lead to serious injuries and destruction.
Savannah is called a cat with canine habits or a cat of one owner. To adapt comfortably to the family, she needs a main person, to whom she shows truly dog-like affection. She wags her tail like a dog and learns perfectly how to give a paw.
Attachment to one person is a feature of all wild and semi-wild cats kept in the house. This can create an insoluble problem if the pet needs to be placed in good hands temporarily or permanently. The savannah will not accept new owners, even if it is fed with the best delicacies. The possibility of such a problem should be taken into account and ways to solve it must be worked out if you are going to get a semi-feral cat.
Most breeders note that Savannahs have an unusually high level of intelligence. They have a good memory and the ability to quickly learn various commands. Another natural feature is high activity. You will have to take regular walks with your cat, so the ability to walk on a harness is one of the basic skills, along with the ability to use a tray and a scratching post.
Savannah character
The Savannah cat is very smart and affectionate and for this reason will take root in a family with children, with whom it behaves playfully and friendly, becoming their friend and accomplice even in the most absurd pranks.
He allows himself to be taken out even on a leash, loves canned food and doesn’t mind being washed from time to time.
The cat is very curious and active, and his affection for his owner is expressed in absolute devotion and in close relationships: the Savannah cat knows how to make himself understood, and knows how to always communicate with his owner, to whom he will not fail to reserve his licks and gentle strokes whole body.
Description of the breed
Today, the Savannah cat is one of the rarest exotic breeds of pets. Her appearance cannot but attract the attention of others, thanks to her unusual color and large size (of all the hybrid breeds, the Savannah is the largest cat), because her ancestors are large cats of the Serval breed.
The most valued by breeders are purebred individuals obtained by mating two savannahs or a savannah and a serval. They have the most striking appearance, good genetic health, large size, and a high level of intelligence. Males of the F5 generation (indirect descendants) are used for mating with females of the F2, F3 and F4 generations.
Appearance
The breed standard approved by the TICA (International Cat Association) describes what the Savannah looks like. This is a tall, graceful cat, practically indistinguishable in appearance from the wild African serval. Features of the figure: long neck and legs, high ears, muscular, athletic torso with strong bones.
- The cat's head is small, wedge-shaped with an elongated muzzle line. The frontal part with brow ridges is well defined. The bridge of the nose is wide, straight, the stop line is not pronounced. The nose is large, well pigmented in accordance with the color. The whisker pads are slightly pronounced.
- The ears are large, erect, and have the shape of an equilateral triangle (wide bases and high rounded tips). Tassels on the ears are not pronounced or absent. There are characteristic light spots on the outer side of the ears.
- The eyes are medium in size, oblong, almond-shaped, deep-set. The distance between the eyes is quite wide (no less than the size of the eye itself). A characteristic feature is the presence of tear-shaped marks in the inner corners of the eyes.
- The body is elongated, graceful, the chest is well developed. The shoulder blades protrude moderately. The full and long femur stands out, making the hind legs look longer than the front. The line of the groin and abdomen is moderately tucked.
- The legs are elongated, with well-developed muscles. The paws are large, oval-shaped, with thick pads and large, retractable claws.
- The tail is of medium length, straight, rather thick at the base, gradually tapering towards the end (the tip of the tail should be blunt). When the animal stands, the tail drops just below the hock.
Disqualifying defects include congenital physical defects, such as polydactyly, cryptorchidism, tail creases, and strabismus. Behavioral disorders are distinguished separately: aggression, intention to deceive, fearfulness.
Size and weight
Among the hybrid breeds, savannas are the largest in size. The weight of adult cats is 10-12 kg, height at the withers is 50-60 cm. The length of the body including the tail reaches 1.5 m or more.
Males are somewhat heavier and larger than females (sexual dimorphism). The largest cats of the F1 hybrid group can weigh up to 15 kg. A kitten reaches the size of an adult animal by the age of 3 years.
Did you know that the tallest cat in the world is a Savannah cat named Arcturus Aldebaran Powers. His height at the withers is 48.4 centimeters! A representative of the Guinness Book of Records measured the cat in 2018 and so far this record has not been broken.
The tallest cat in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is a Savannah cat named Arcturus Aldebaran Powers
Wool
Savannahs have short, thick hair that is dense and hard to the touch (in the spot area, the guard hair has a softer structure). There is also a short, downy undercoat that warms during the cold season.
Colors
The standard describes four color options:
- black;
- brown (black) spotted tabby;
- black silver spotted tabby (snow variety);
- smoky black.
Spotted color options are considered classic. Dark, large markings (dark brown or black) contrast sharply with the lighter base color. Stains of other shades and medallions are not acceptable.
Other features of the tabby color:
- oval or rounded spots;
- larger pattern in the back area;
- the presence of parallel stripes from the back of the head to the shoulder blades;
- In black shrouds, ghost spots are preferred.
The lips and paw pads, in any color variant, are black, the nose is pink or red with a black outline (dark gray or black is typical for blacks).

Eyes
The standard requirements for the color of the iris are not strict. Usually this is a palette of shades from amber yellow to emerald. There is no dependence on coat color.

Life expectancy - how long do savannahs live?
Savannah cats are long-lived cats. The average lifespan of the breed is 20 years, which is significantly longer than that of their wild ancestors (the African serval lives up to 12-15 years).
The cats have good genetic health, which was achieved through careful attention to maintaining the purity of the breed. With the right selection of partners and competent mating, kittens are born healthy. Good care, timely sterilization and vaccination give animals every chance not to encounter dangerous pathologies and live a long, active life.
Are Savannah cats hypoallergenic or not? How often do they shed?
Savannahs are considered pets with a low degree of allergenicity, and, with careful communication with the pet, many people sensitive to the Fel-D1 protein successfully keep a cat of this breed. Breeders note several reasons for the low allergenicity of savannahs:
- Short fur does not actively shed. The periods of seasonal renewal of their coat pass quietly and, with daily combing, a large amount of lost hair does not accumulate in the house.
- Thanks to their short hair, Savannahs do not groom themselves as often as representatives of the Siberian or Persian breeds do. This way, fewer saliva particles remain on the surface of their fur.
- Savannahs love water very much and, at any opportunity, they gladly take a bath or splash in a pond, getting great pleasure from it. Along the way, all the secretions are washed away, as well as most of the fallen hairs.
According to some breeders, the amount of Fel-D1 protein may be affected by the presence of a certain percentage of feral cat blood. It has been noted that representatives of early generations are less allergenic than representatives of the hybrid subgroups F4, F5.
It is known that there are no completely hypoallergenic cat breeds. In particles of epithelium, saliva, and fur of all cats, there is a special protein Fel-D1, which is a strong allergen for humans. The degree of allergenicity of a particular breed varies. This largely depends on the length of the coat, shedding activity and some other factors.
Friendliness
Savannahs of the first generation require a more responsible attitude when purchasing and maintaining. They require especially careful education and socialization. Any mistakes are fraught with the formation of a semi-wild, unsociable disposition.
Photo: @benzi_savi_andfam/Instagram
Genetically, these cats have a desire for dominance. The maximum friendliness that these cats can show is to sit next to them and allow them to pet them and scratch them behind the ears. Another feature of F1 savannas is a tense attitude towards strangers who find themselves on their territory. They show their dissatisfaction with a loud, irreconcilable hiss.
Later generations accept the encroachment on the territory peacefully. Savannahs of generation F3 and above have an open, friendly disposition and accept attacks on their territory peacefully. They are capable of training, easily remember and follow the rules of behavior in the house. If the Savannah is purchased as a family friend, for affection, communication, play, then you should pay attention to kittens of subgroups F4, F5.
Pets of all subgroups show affection for their owner, but other members of the household, as a rule, are content with a cooler attitude.
Hotels in Savannah where to stay
Savannah is a pedestrian city, so you won't need a car. There is a regular movement of free buses (shuttles) for tourists around the city, and all kinds of excursions and tours are held in the historical center. Therefore, I would advise staying in Savannah in a good hotel in the city center, especially if you are traveling for more than one day, or close to it (in the Oakdale area), as we did.
First of all, pay attention to these hotels in the center of old Savannah with good reviews:
- Andaz Savannah 5* – the coolest hotel in the city of Savannah;
- Hyatt Regency 4* – a comfortable hotel located right on the river bank;
- Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott 3* is the best inexpensive hotel close to attractions.
But if you are driving around the USA by car, like us, then it is much more convenient to stay in chain hotels in the suburbs, where there is free parking for the car. That's what we did: in the evening we rested at a very decent Quality Inn with a swimming pool and slept well at night. And in the morning, after a good hearty breakfast, we were already in the historical center of Savannah, where we parked the car next to the visitor center and went to see the city.

Savannah and children
For a family with children growing up, a savannah of the hybrid group F4 or F5 is suitable. For cats of early generations, it is possible to show moments of aggression if they don’t like something.
Families with children under 5 years old are not recommended to have a savannah. All hybrid cats are quite large and strong, and have sharp, large claws. Having played out, such a pet can accidentally push or injure the baby.
Savannahs easily get along with older children and are tireless partners for games and entertainment. Older children may be tasked with simple pet care.
Some cats are touchy: if they are punished or a toy is taken away, they may go into hiding and not come out for a long time. Vindictiveness and rancor are not typical for savannahs F4 and F5.

Attitude towards other animals
First- and second-generation Savannahs are competitive, just like their wild ancestors. Therefore, there may be cases of competition between two pets of the same sex living in the same territory.
Savannah and the Canadian Sphynx Photo: @lennon_nankara_savannahh/Instagram
Domestic cats may experience attacks from larger semi-wild cats. Friendly relationships with dogs in savannahs develop much more often.
The hunting instincts of savannas of both early and later generations are strong, so keeping pets together with small rodents and birds should be avoided. This could end tragically for the latter.
Playfulness
Savannah is an active and playful breed. The owner must take care of sufficient living space for the pet so that it has the opportunity to play, run and jump to its fullest. You will need an arsenal of toys, which will have to be updated periodically.
Photo: @iampusspusscat/Instagram
The best entertainment for the savannah is to frolic in a spacious pond. Therefore, a pool with warm water in the local area will be very useful. Kittens are taught to walk on a leash or harness from early childhood. Regular walks are necessary for the normal development of a cat’s body, even if there is a spacious area around the house.

How to cope with loneliness
Savannahs are cats that need communication with their owner. They try to constantly be nearby and accompany you in all matters. The more time the owner spends with the pet, the more trusting the relationship will be formed.
In the absence of its owners, the savannah can become sad, so the owner must take care of what the cat will do while no one sees it. Left to its own devices, the savannah will have fun as it pleases: damaging property, scratching walls, throwing over flower pots.
Photo: @bathwellscba/Instagram
You will have to take Savannah with you on trips; leaving it in the care of a friend or relative will not work.
Cost of kittens
Savannahs are among the most expensive of all exotic cat breeds. The price in Russia is largely determined depending on the standard of living of the animals in the nursery. The cost is also influenced by the attitude towards a particular hybrid group, age, gender, pedigree.
The price in rubles for kittens, depending on the hybrid group, is distributed as follows:
- F1 kittens – 600 thousand rubles. – 1.2 million rubles.
- Kittens F2 – 300 thousand rubles. – 600 thousand rubles.
- F3 kittens – 150 thousand rubles. – 300 thousand rubles.
- F4 kittens – 100 thousand rubles. – 150 thousand rubles.
- F5 kittens – 80 thousand rubles. – 150 thousand rubles.
Savannah cat: Why is it so rare
This breed was completely unknown and extremely rare, but quickly became popular due to its size and color. Not everyone will decide to have a tame cheetah, but a cat with the appearance of a wild animal and the character of a domestic one will easily fit into the family and become its favorite.
The Savannah cat is a very expensive breed, primarily because it is relatively new, given that recognition only took place in 2001, and even if it has now spread to France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, it is not easy to obtain Savannah specimens. The problem lies precisely in the crossing of domestic cats with servals, which now inhabit Africa: the pregnancy of a female serval is, in fact, longer than that of normal cats; in reality the pregnancy reaches eighty-three days. In addition, this is also a matter of high-risk pregnancies: a maximum of three kittens are born, and not all of them will survive.
- Another factor that determines the high cost of each specimen is the classification of the cat itself, which is identified by the name and affix of the cattery, as well as by the abbreviation from F1 to F5, which serves to denote interbreeding and continuity of generations.
- Another element, even more picky than the others, which causes prices to soar is the very fertility of the Savannah male, which unfortunately only appears in the fifth generation, remaining sterile for the previous four generations: this greatly limits the spread of the Savannah.
Depending on the generation to which it belongs from F1 to F5, the price of a Savannah specimen can vary from 6 thousand to 12 thousand euros.

When planning to buy a Savannah kitten, you must first of all choose the right cattery. Healthy and mentally balanced kittens are born to those breeders who carefully select pairs, carefully manage the pregnancy of cats, and skillfully socialize kittens in the first months of their life.
Photo: @benzi_savi_andfam/Instagram
And on the contrary: improperly organized socialization can threaten that the kitten will grow up unsociable, aggressive or cowardly. The breeder should be ready to advise the owner on the maintenance of the Savannah during the first months of the kitten’s life in a new home.
Savannah USA
Savannah is an American city founded in 1733 by the British and is located in Chatham County in the state of Georgia in the USA, practically on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and on the banks of the Savannah River of the same name (north of which, by the way, the state of South Carolina begins), on which port built.

City of Savannah
The city of Savannah is one of the most famous small cities among tourists on the east coast of the United States. About 15 million people come here every year, which is 3 times more than Yosemite National Park. The territory of the city of Savannah consists of several areas, the most interesting for tourists is the historical center (Downtown Historic District).
Main areas of the city of Savannah in the USA
Interesting Facts:
- The name of the city of Savannah comes from the river on which it stands. And the river was named after the tribe of Shawnee Indians, who lived here before the settlement of the area by Europeans. It is also believed that it is quite possible that the area reminded the British of the African savannah, which is why the city received such a beautiful name.
- The population of the city of Savannah is about 140 thousand people.
- The historical part of the city of Savannah has many interesting architectural attractions, as well as parks and squares.
Weather in Savannah
The climate in Savannah is truly subtropical oceanic, and it is warm at any time of the year, and in winter the temperature very rarely drops to zero. So what is the conclusion from here? You can go to Savannah at any time and it’s always wonderful there: in the summer it’s about 30 degrees Celsius, and in spring, autumn and winter the air temperature is cooler, only +10-16 °C. And although there is quite a lot of precipitation in Savannah throughout the year, in general the weather in this city is very comfortable for tourism and travel.
How to get to Savannah
Getting to Savannah is very easy, primarily due to its convenient location at the crossroads of major roads on the East Coast of the United States. We decided to visit Savannah by car during our trip from Miami to New York (our route across the USA was circular this time: from New York we drove along the mountain roads and national parks of the East Coast - Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains, but back along the ocean coast). And we decided which of the historical cities in the American South is better to visit - Charleston or Savannah?
Both of these cities were, of course, familiar to us from Margaret Mitchell's famous novel Gone with the Wind as the places where the parents of the main characters, Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara, lived. But after studying the information, we realized that for the atmosphere of old Georgia we should go to Savannah.
Helpful advice: You should definitely visit Savannah if you want to visit the most popular US national park, the Great Smoky Mountains, while vacationing in Miami. The city of Savannah is located just halfway from Miami to the Smoky Mountains and would be a convenient place to stop for a day to relax.

Care and maintenance
Savannahs require a comfortable living space: a spacious house and an adjacent area with an enclosure where you can frolic to your heart's content. A cat play set must be installed in the house, along with plenty of toys.
Photo: @drewhouseloveless/Instagram
Caring for cats is not difficult. In everyday life they are quite unpretentious, clean, and quickly learn to use the litter box. It is recommended to free all surfaces in the house from breakable objects, since Savannahs can easily jump to a height of up to 2.5 meters.
What to feed
Breeders recommend choosing a natural diet for the savannah that is as close to natural as possible. Only high-quality meat with limited fat content is suitable. Recommended varieties: rabbit, calf, chicken, turkey. Meat pieces are given raw (pre-frozen). Occasionally, meat can be replaced with fish (mainly tuna, salmon).
Photo: @f1savannah_gatsby/Instagram
It is useful to supplement the diet with chicken by-products and raw vegetables (zucchini, carrots, cabbage, pumpkin). Due to the peculiarities of the digestive system, fermented milk products, most types of fish, and cereals are contraindicated for savannahs. Vitamin supplements containing taurine must be included in the diet.
Dry food is less preferable. It is recommended to choose only high-quality holistic diets where the grain content is minimal.
- Brit Care;
- Acana;
- Carnilove.
Grooming
Caring for the short coat of the Savannah is easy. It is enough to brush your pet once a week with a massage brush-glove (daily during the molting period). Breeders recommend replacing brushing by wiping with a damp cloth. The fabric effectively removes dust, dirt and loose hairs and polishes the coat to a shine.
Photo: @taniaviesulas/Instagram
Savannahs are not bathed often - once a month. Usually, water procedures are the best entertainment for them, so pets perceive any opportunity to splash around in the bathtub or in the pool with enthusiasm.
Set aside time once a week to clean your eyes and ears. The sharp tips of the claws must be trimmed as they grow. This is necessary for the safety of the animals themselves and the people around them.
Potential Health Problems
Despite the fact that the breed was created artificially, the genetic health of its representatives is stronger than that of many native breeds. The genes of the wild serval make themselves felt, and practically no fatal hereditary pathologies are recorded.
Photo: @phie195/Instagram
All diseases transmitted by inheritance are among the external defects that only affect the pet’s ability to participate in exhibitions and breeding. Among the diagnosed pathologies are dwarfism, cleft palate, polydactyly, cryptorchidism.
Health problems in hybrid cats arise more often due to care errors, lack of necessary vaccinations, and incorrect selection of partners for mating.
Pros and cons of the breed
The main advantage of the Savannah is its exotic appearance, which attracts many who dream of owning a pet of this breed. Their high mental characteristics are no less valued, making cats complex and interesting individuals with whom one cannot be bored.
Savannahs are capable of mastering a simple training course. When properly socialized, they make excellent companions, loyal and friendly. Caring for cats' fur is simple; keeping them does not require the services of a groomer. Another advantage of savannas is good health and long life.
Photo: @larche_de_lulu/Instagram
Among the disadvantages of the breed is a possible manifestation of aggression, which is why semi-wild cats are not recommended for families with small children. The desire for dominance can create difficulties if there are other pets in the family. A large cat will only be comfortable in spacious housing. She must be able to realize internal energy; this is a necessary condition for maintaining physical and emotional health.
History of the breed
The appearance of the Savannah cat breed is associated with the names of two American breeders - Judy Frank and Susie Woods. In the 80s of the twentieth century, Judy, who owned a serval nursery, borrowed a male serval from her friend Susie for mating. The male turned out to be active and, along with purebred cats of his breed, the male also mated a domestic Siamese cat. The born female kitten had a unique combination - the appearance of a cheetah and the docile nature of a domestic cat. His new owner Susie found this combination interesting. She decided that this feature could be consolidated by laying the foundation for a new breed (the fashion for wild cats was growing in society).
Photo: @havannah_in_paris/Instagram
Attempts to breed a new hybrid breed with unique characteristics were continued and were successful; in 1986, several more kittens were born. Later, they were assigned to the F1 hybrid group (direct descendants of the serval) and were used to produce later generations of savannahs.
In 1996, the first standard of the new breed was submitted for approval to the TICA association. The first breeder to produce fertile males of the F5 generation was the American Joyce Sroufe. Her cattery A1 SAVANNAHS is still famous today for having the best gene pool of cats of this breed.
The popularity of savannas, despite the high price, has grown so much that scammers have not ignored it. In 2006, a certain Simon Brody, the owner, announced that he had bred a unique breed of cats with the appearance of a cheetah. The breed was introduced as "ashera". Using advertising tricks, the fraudster developed extraordinary public interest in the breed, placing an exorbitant price on the cats. Many wealthy people dreamed of purchasing Ashera; it began to be considered a symbol of prestige and luxury.
Photo: @sarek_thecat/Instagram
The deception lasted until 2008, when it was finally revealed that the Ashera brand was none other than a Savannah cat. In this way, scammers profitably resold Savannah kittens raised in the nursery of breeder Chris Shirk. The deception was confirmed by the results of a genetic examination. To this day, the Asher breed is not recognized by any felinological association, does not have a standard or EMS code for breeds and colors, but still finds buyers among wealthy people.

Interesting facts about Savannah cats
- Savannah is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive breed.
- The popularization of savannas was facilitated by the fact that by the time of their breeding, a ban had been issued on keeping cheetahs and leopards in houses, the population of which had by that time sharply declined.
- According to one myth, cheetah genetic material was used to develop the Savannah breed.
- The basis of the wild serval's relationship with people is not aggression, but distrust. In the savannah, whose genes are largely diluted with the genes of the domestic cat, aggression towards people is even less typical and is regarded as a behavioral disorder.
Appearance of a savannah cat
A proud look and attractive eyes are always in motion with running, typical of wild cats. The Savannah cat captivates with its graceful gait, sometimes stiff with its shoulder blades opening outward, and its extremely affectionate and pleasant character.

- Hermann. We call our cat Kus, and it’s not for nothing, because he chews everything he can reach. He especially likes silicone hair ties. Already eaten are a phone charger, an elastic band from shorts, a sofa blanket, a Boss T-shirt and many other little things. But! Not at all touchy. You can hit him with a slipper or yell, and after a minute he comes running and starts jumping around with a cheerful look. He loves to be a companion in the bathroom: he sits on the side while I bathe. But he doesn’t like water; every bath is a tragedy with elements of a bloodbath. For entertainment: he likes to fetch objects like a dog, happily chases his tail in circles, and excitedly plays tug of war with me. Can't meow. Previously, instead of meowing, he had a strange hissing sound, but then it began to sound like something similar to a child’s cry. Now there are sounds similar to the creaking of a rusty gate.
- Svetlana. Savannahs fearlessly explore everything new and unknown. The main thing is to use a strong harness when walking and avoid dog walking areas. Cats are big, their claws are thick and sharp, so in every room we have a cat play set. If it is present, acts of vandalism are reduced to zero. About hypoallergenicity. Savannahs, like all others, can cause allergic reactions. It has been noticed that the frequency of reactions to these cats is lower than to others. And one more thing - it was noticed that savannas of later generations cause a stronger reaction than savannas F1 and F2. It also matters how closely a person interacts with cats.
Savannah – our review and impressions
I must say that I will remember my day in Savannah for a long time. I haven’t received so many impressions at once for a long time, I really liked the city. And it’s a pity that during our trip from Miami to New York we allocated only one day to explore the city of Savannah. But as they say: there is a reason to come back!
And now I’ll tell you what we saw in Savannah and what we did there.
First of all, right after breakfast, we arrived at the visitor center on Martin Luther King Street, and it turned out to be still closed. But we parked the car there anyway. As I said, the first hour of parking is free, and then $1 per hour. When entering, you need to take a ticket, and you need to pay for parking at the exit.
The City of Savannah Visitor Center is located in a historic building. From the outside it doesn't make the right impression, but inside you realize how spacious it really is.
We then headed towards Forsyth Park on foot. Along the way, we visited several public gardens with spreading trees, under which squirrels were having breakfast in the morning sun (reminiscent of the national parks of California).
What struck me most here were the cozy houses. It is not customary to build tall buildings in Savannah, so you feel comfortable on the streets of the city. Compared to the oppressive atmosphere of New York or Chicago with their skyscrapers, Savannah is much freer. It’s not customary here to run, having a snack on the go, but to sit at breakfast until almost 11 o’clock in local cafes. Just like in Northern Thailand.
Along the quiet and peaceful streets of Savannah, old oak trees are planted, the branches of which are overgrown with Spanish moss. Therefore, despite the heat, we successfully hid in the shade.
Squirrels in Savannah live right on the city streets
Savannah's cozy cabins are known for their beautiful staircases. This one leads to the Irish center
The most ordinary public garden on a quiet street in the city - and the one with a fountain!
This is Spanish moss, it grows on all the trees in the city
I especially liked Forsyth Park in Savannah. It is quite large, and all its paths lead to the central fountain, the symbol of Savannah. This is a very elegant, airy structure, near which every self-respecting traveler touring the southern United States should take a photo. And we are no exception. In addition, it is cooler next to the fountain.
Fun fact: On St. Patrick's Day, the water in Forsyth Park's fountain turns green!
The main symbol of Savannah is the fountain in Forsyth Park, built in 1858. This is the most photographed place in the city. There are similar fountains in New York, Peru and France
I was so impressed by the main fountain in the city of Savannah that I did a whole photo shoot with it!
The wide alleys of Forsyth Park provide pleasant shade and protect visitors from the daytime heat
Dima also liked Forsyth Park
Leaving the park, we immediately saw the Dot shuttle arriving, which transports tourists around the city for free. We boarded it and headed towards the river part, to the famous Savannah River embankment.
To get to the Riverfront, you need to go down the stairs or elevator located next to City Hall to the pier. By the way, there is also another information center with a toilet.
To get to the Riverfront, you can use the elevator, as we did
Former factory buildings have become restaurants and cafes. And along the street everything is the same as 100 years ago, a small passenger train rides
It turned out that this street is not so quiet! In addition to the fact that on the embankment itself preparations were underway for the fish festival, the opening of which was scheduled in the evening, the street parallel to it was loaded with trucks that were delivering something and servicing local shops and restaurants. Once upon a time, all these buildings were factories, and it was just as noisy and dirty. And now it is a tourist center, the most attractive place in the city for evening walks and dinner with a beautiful view of the river.
We walked along the embankment, looked at the Savannah River, admired the Queen Georgia pleasure boat and decided to definitely swim along the river. So we had to go back to City Hall. Boarding for the Savannah Belles Ferry began directly across from him.
Everything in Savannah is historical, even the paddle boat!
Strictly on schedule, we went to the other side, where the business center is located. And then, after waiting a little, we got back to Riverfront. We got off at another pier, located next to the Marriott Hotel and the statue of the Waving Girl.
Recommendation: By the way, if you want to live in Savannah on the river in a quiet and peaceful environment, it is better to stay in this part of the city, at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront , located in the Emmet Park area, since on the embankment itself we found it very it's too noisy and fussy.
The cabin of the Savannah River ferry is trimmed with wood.

On the way we also met a huge container ship!
He even honked our horn
