Anti-vandal fabric for sofa (anti-claw): cat-proof furniture material

If there is a cat living in the house or purchasing a pet is only in the plans, you should think about a very pressing question - how to choose the right upholstery for the sofa and armchairs.

Experienced cat owners know firsthand that the sofa often becomes their favorite place to live, comfortable in all respects: you can sleep on it in comfort, and you can sharpen your grown nails with pleasure !

And even with great luck, when the cat does not make any attempts to deliberately damage the furniture, it is still impossible to completely protect him from walking on the sofa.

The best anti-vandal fabric for a sofa from cats

Some anti-vandal fabrics are marked in the characteristics as “anti-claw”. This means that the canvas is resistant to damage from sharp objects, especially the claws of pets (cats, dogs).

The following fabrics are considered the best in this category:

  • herd;
  • impregnated microfiber;
  • Scottish;
  • faux suede;
  • Verona;
  • panda;
  • galaxy.

These fabrics contain Teflon, which makes them durable.

  1. The anti-claw fabric is dense and durable due to the fabric and technology, and therefore lasts a long time and is even problematic to pierce.
  2. The canvas is impregnated with a special composition, but does not create a greenhouse effect.
  3. The fabric is pleasant and comfortable for the body.
  4. “Anti-claw” is available in any color, so the material will fit into any interior.

Tips and tricks for choosing

Before purchasing, you should determine the tactile sensations from contact with the fabric, so as not to experience discomfort later. The sample you like should be inspected for flaws or defects.

The material should be pleasant to the touch.

Among the main features:

  • Density. This indicator is considered good if its value is 200 g/m2.
  • The Martindale abrasion test, which is used to determine the strength of a material. The method is that the fabric is mechanically affected, until broken threads or visible changes in texture appear. For upholstery for household use, the number of abrasion cycles must be at least 7000.
  • Kindness to the environment. The use of harmless water-based adhesives, natural and safe artificial fabrics is important if there are children or allergy sufferers in the house.
  • Easy to care for The ability to wash the covers in a washing machine or use various detergents and stain removers will make cleaning the furniture much easier for the owner.
  • Resistant to high temperatures, humidity, sunlight, alcohol and other agents.

The material must have certain characteristics.
You should also consider the safety of the material, as some of them may cause allergic reactions or are undesirable for children's furniture.

Important! It is better to buy anti-vandal fabric from reliable manufacturers. First you need to study the quality certificate, which indicates the composition in percentage.

Natural materials

All fabrics suitable for upholstering a sofa can be divided into three large groups: natural, synthetic and artificial. Each species has its own representatives, a number of advantages and disadvantages.

Upholstery fabric is considered natural if it contains at least 30% natural fibers.

  • Wool is made from the natural covering of animals, such as sheep or goats. This is an environmentally friendly, very warm material that is resistant to dirt and odors. Dense felted wool becomes windproof.
  • Cotton is a plant fiber that is sensitive to light. Absorbs moisture perfectly, “remembers” its shape after heating, wrinkles easily and is quickly wiped off.
  • – fabric made from plant fibers, smooth and matte. Dense fabric, over 380 g/m, is used for upholstery independently, in its pure form. This material is safe for health and environmentally friendly.

Natural fabrics:

  • excellent air permeability;
  • do not cause allergies;
  • pleasant to the touch.

Flaws :

  • wear out quickly;
  • crumple;
  • shrink after washing;
  • are expensive.

Customer reviews and experiences

Flock is the most practical and attractive material in its category, so many buyers do not think about the choice and do not regret the purchase. These are the advantages of this type of upholstery, they note:

  • Spectacular appearance. The fabric can be single-layer or structural, while the complexity of the three-dimensional pattern and color palette have virtually no effect on the cost of the upholstery.
  • Pleasant tactile sensations: the upholstery is smooth, the surface resembles velvet · Long service life with proper care. Let's talk separately about how to clean the fabric so that it lasts as long as possible.
  • Price payable. This advantage is not entirely correct, because there are expensive flocks of high-quality European and Canadian production, which are comparable in cost to elite mixed upholstery fabrics. Affordable prices only for herds made in China or Turkey. However, in terms of its anti-vandal properties, it is not inferior to expensive fabrics.
  • The main advantage of flock is the anti-claw function, thanks to which the material has become very popular, especially among pet owners. If we compare flocking on a non-woven basis with upholstery or chenille, the advantage is obvious. In fact, the cat pierces the upholstery with its curved claws and pulls the woven fibers inside out, giving the furniture its characteristic “worn” look. In the case of flock, none of this happens, since the non-woven base does not have these same fibers that can be pulled.

Flock

Sofa with flock cover

If you are wondering what fabric is best to choose for upholstering a sofa in a house where there are pets, then we recommend that you pay attention to flock. This non-woven upholstery material looks very similar to velvet.

Upholstered furniture upholstered with this material is not afraid of your pet's claws. Another advantage of this upholstery material is hypoallergenic. This means that the material is absolutely safe even for children.

The flock is very pleasant and soft to the touch; in addition, the coating is very easy to wash. It is enough to apply a little washing powder to the sponge, and then wash any stain from the material. Another pleasant feature of this upholstery material is that it does not fade under the influence of direct sunlight.

Despite all the above advantages, it is worth mentioning some disadvantages of the material. First of all, flock wears out very quickly, just like velvet, so upholstered furniture with a similar surface will retain its original appearance for a short period of time, after which the material will need to be replaced. Also, the upholstery material actively absorbs odors and retains them for a long time, so this surface is not suitable for a sofa in the kitchen.

But for upholstered furniture that will be located in the living room or nursery, flock is perfect. For a living room, it is better to use material in light and soft colors; for children’s rooms, brighter colors, and possibly colorful patterns, are suitable. Upholstered furniture with flock upholstery is also perfect for use in loggias or verandas. Below is a list of some of the features of this material:

  • environmental friendliness - natural raw materials are used for its production;
  • strength - the material is practically not deformed;
  • resistance to mechanical stress - the material is difficult to pierce, cut or tear;
  • ease of use - the material is very easy to wash;
  • increased moisture resistance – flock is “not afraid of water”;
  • softness – the material is very pleasant to the touch;
  • short service life due to susceptibility to abrasion.
  • low level of wear resistance.

What is anti-claw

Upholstery that is resistant to abrasion, scratches and cuts is called anti-vandal. These qualities are guaranteed by Teflon impregnation. One such material is anti-claw fabric, which prevents fibers from being pulled out of the fiber structure.

Cat in the house

On a note! Anti-claw fabrics have different characteristics and technological fiber structures. The dense weave of the threads improves the strength characteristics of the material and its resistance to shape changes. The cat's claws slide along the surface when it tries to sharpen its claws on the furniture, so over time the animal's interest in the sofa disappears. The modern material is water-repellent and does not retain dirt and grease thanks to the Teflon coating.

Microfiber

Natural fabrics

The main advantage of this type of upholstery material is excellent ventilation, thanks to which the sofa “breathes” freely. Despite this, natural fabric very quickly loses its attractive appearance.

Choosing fabric for upholstering a sofa is not as simple a task as it might seem at first glance. Before making a decision, you need to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of each option being considered.

I would like to say right away that if there are animals or small children in the house, then it is not recommended to purchase a sofa with delicate, expensive and difficult-to-use upholstery. In this case, you should opt for a durable material that will be hard to damage with claws or permanently leave a drawing with a felt-tip pen on it.

If you are the “life of the party” and friends often gather in your house, then the sofa upholstery should be abrasion-resistant, otherwise it will very quickly lose its appearance. If you purchase upholstered furniture solely for decorative purposes, then you can choose the most expensive and beautiful upholstery materials that will bring an atmosphere of luxury and wealth to the interior.

We have decided on the basic rules for choosing upholstery material, now let’s move on to comparative characteristics.

Jacquard

It is also an anti-claw fabric. Fabric has proven itself to be one of the most reliable ways to make durable upholstered furniture. The material has a high density, so products covered with the presented canvases are ideal for placement in rooms where pets are used to playing. Why does jacquard fit the definition of anti-claw fabric? Reviews from experts confirm that here the threads are intertwined as closely as possible. They are distinguished by their considerable thickness and rigid structure, which makes it possible to create truly stable canvases. It is extremely difficult to damage such material, since the increased frequency of weaving does not allow the teeth and claws of pets to catch on the threads and pull them out.

What types are there

Anti-vandal fabric comes in the following types:

  • Relax. Resin based material, wash resistant.
  • Faux suede. Luxurious thick fabric for upholstering a sofa.
  • Teflon flock. The material is soft and pleasant to the touch.
  • Velvet furniture. Resistant to deformation, does not have artificial impregnations.
  • Chenille. It is durable and wear-resistant.
  • Tapestry. Thick fabric that prevents cat claws from snagging.
  • Microfiber Galaxy. Neutral colors of Teflon-coated fabric are ideal for standard interiors.
  • Scottish.
  • Flock against claws.

Velvet for furniture

Flock on a three-fabric basis

Previously, cotton waste, wool and synthetic fibers were used to produce flax from flocking. The word "flock" is translated from English as "fluff". The material resembles velvet, which contains airy fibers of natural and artificial fibers.

Types of flock:

  • polyester, characterized by high wear resistance, hydrophobicity and resistance to fading;
  • polyamide, which is soft and dyeable, quickly recovers after prolonged loads;
  • viscose is most often used for finishing, despite the presence of bright colors.

What is flock

One of the most common durable upholstery options is flock. Its second name is microvelor. This fabric is created on the basis of cotton and polyester and is coated with a mixture of nylon and nylon.

Flock resembles velvet, has a small pile, can be painted in any color, and is highly durable and wear-resistant. It withstands more than 80 thousand cycles according to the abrasion factor, thanks to which it received the “title” of wear-resistant fabric.

In addition, flock has the following characteristics:

  • treated with water-repellent impregnation;
  • does not fade when exposed to sunlight;
  • does not wrinkle;
  • repels not only water, but also dirt;
  • Easy to clean first with a dry and then slightly damp cloth.

Important! When deciding what fabric to choose for upholstering a sofa if you have a cat, you should not forget that the purchased model should not have wooden decorative ornaments.

Velours

What are the advantages of this anti-claw furniture fabric? Consumer reviews describe it as extremely resistant to damage. Velor is a very common type of fabric. The material is actively used in the production of upholstered furniture, the design of which involves the creation of exquisite and complex shapes. Velvet generally has a uniform structure. Both artificial and natural fibers are used for its production. As in the previous case, the smooth and fairly dense structure protects the material from the effects of animal teeth and claws.

Flock (velvet substitute)

This is an upholstery fabric with a base of polyester and cotton (usually 35% cotton, 65% synthetic), onto which pile is applied electrostatically. First, a canvas is made from cotton thread of rare plain weave (“mesh”). It is impregnated with glue and stretched in an electromagnetic field, where lint is sprayed onto it. The result is a pile fabric of neutral white color. Then the fabric is dyed by printing.

Advantages of flock

  • Keeps its shape constant
  • Easy to clean.
  • Has good light fastness
  • Has water-repellent properties
  • Has a dense structure
  • Has good antistatic properties - resistant to dust
  • Durability of paint; brightness of colors
  • Health safety.

Various recommendations for choosing anti-vandal fabric and caring for it.

Any type of anti-vandal material requires special care. All operating, washing and cleaning conditions are indicated on the product label. Please pay special attention to this when making a purchase.

Velvet upholstery can usually be washed even at 60 degrees. And if the cover is not removable, then the velvet can be thoroughly cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Flocked upholstery requires careful handling, as its adhesive base can be damaged by too intense wet cleaning.

It is recommended to vacuum the anti-vandal upholstery from time to time. This will remove accumulated dust from your sofa and freshen it up.

Also read about a set of covers for sofas and armchairs in this material.

Attention: we recommend not to rely solely on anti-vandal fabric if the pet is not even equipped with a scratching post. In this case, the cat has no other choice and will periodically return to the sofa. And sooner or later you can ruin even specially treated upholstery. Therefore, it is better to buy a special device for the animal, where it can sharpen its claws to its heart’s content.

Relax

The main difference between this fabric is its multilayer structure and special processing.

The bottom layer is made of cotton and polyester, which gives the fabric durability. Next is a layer of isoprene or artificial rubber, which has the property of restoring its structure after mechanical stress. Therefore, your sofa will not be afraid of any scratches.

The outer layer deserves special attention in relaxation fabric. Regardless of the color and texture, which can be very diverse, it has one unique feature. Thanks to the special ANTISTAIN technology and the presence of carbon fibers, all kinds of contaminants that may arise in everyday life are easily removed from the surface of the relaxation table; In addition, it is very difficult to set fire to or melt.

How to care for furniture made from anti-vandal fabric

Most of these fabrics can be washed and cleaned with detergents, but others require delicate care. In any case, it is not recommended to apply alcohol-based cleaners and stain removers directly to upholstery. The reaction can be checked in a separate section.

Do not use harsh cleaners on sofas.

General care recommendations are as follows:

  1. It is best to remove stains with a soap solution or a special solution dissolved in water with a soft sponge.
  2. Do not use products containing chlorine, such as White, as they may damage the structure. Vanish Gold, Amway does an excellent job of cleaning delicate and colored fabrics.
  3. You can use folk remedies: laundry soap, a solution of ammonia with lemon juice and starch.
  4. Vacuum the fabric periodically to remove cat hair and dust.

Old stains and prolonged exposure to liquids on the upholstery should not be allowed; in this case, it will lose its presentable appearance much faster and it will be much more difficult to remove dirt.

Attention! The label contains special care instructions and restrictions, so it is recommended that you read the label carefully.

One of the best fabrics is Flock

Flock translated from English means junk. The material owes its name to the manufacturing method. The base is covered with a layer of glue, and then electrified synthetic fibers are sprayed onto the surface under strong pressure. Thanks to static discharge, the fibers stick together vertically and quite firmly, creating the desired volume and pleasant tactile sensations. Sometimes, by analogy, a second layer is created on the fabric, thus forming a patterned relief.

The material is pleasant to the touch: soft, warm, silky, like velor or velvet, but its main quality is the fabric, not sticky. Pet owners have long appreciated its benefits. Unlike other types of upholstery, flock furniture has a non-woven backing, so animals cannot pull threads out of the material with their claws. Among its main advantages are density and strength; even specially made material is difficult to damage. According to Russian GOST, the abrasion rate is 6 thousand cycles. Flock has 50 thousand cycles.

The color palette of flock is multivariate, the material is durable, difficult to mechanical damage, easy to clean, and does not require maintenance.

The fabric is resistant to moisture: it collects liquid on the surface and is absorbed very slowly. The material is wear-resistant. The fabric does not stretch, does not shrink, is not subject to abrasion, and is heat resistant. Temperature changes will not affect its quality if you place the sofa next to the radiator. Smooth and attractive appearance, easy to maintain.

Among the disadvantages, one can highlight the property of accumulating static electricity (the fabric attracts dust and dirt), but most importantly, the material is afraid of alcohol-based compounds. Reliability, contemporary design and the presence of natural materials distinguish flock from other types of upholstery.

Which one to choose: recommendations from experts

The material for furniture should be chosen based not only on its beauty, but also on the disposition of the pet.
The upholstery of a cat-proof sofa should be selected taking into account the behavior of the pet. If he likes to play pranks and constantly destroys furniture, then elegant velor, expensive leather material or luxury eco-leather fabrics are not suitable. When choosing a vandal-proof coating, professionals recommend taking into account the following criteria:

  • Performance. The density and strength of the structure should be sufficient to not leave marks from cat claws. At the same time, the presence of defects, defects and deformations, as well as stains of dirt, is unacceptable on the selected panel.
  • Colors. If the anti-vandal sofa is in the access of several pets, then you should pay attention to dark shades or bright prints. Coverings in light colors without a pattern will require more frequent cleaning. Some experts recommend choosing a color based on the color of the cat's fur.
  • Easy to care for. Anti-vandal protection should be easy to clean with available means - soapy water and a sponge. At the same time, cleaning old stains with stain removers or other more aggressive agents should not leave any lightened areas.
  • Type of coverage. This could be solid upholstery, a separate bedspread or a cover for furniture that the cat has already torn up.

Anti-vandal sofa covers

Already damaged furniture can be covered with anti-vandal fabric or a cover can be purchased. Available in an assortment for sofas of any configuration and size: classic, corner and designer, two- and three-seater, with right or left shelf, Euro-cover, etc.

Covers protect furniture from dirt and cat claws, and also transform and refresh the interior. To hide the sofa as much as possible from a furry vandal, it is better to secure the cover so that the pet does not reach the base. But you can't do anything about the coating.

Flock characteristics:

  • resistance to mechanical damage - the herd is not subject to scratches, marks, and does not tear;
  • Wear resistance: the fabric does not shed, fade or wear out;
  • practicality: the material repels water and dirt well, making it easy to clean, the upholstery is easy to care for.

What features need to be taken into account?

Flock is based on synthetic materials, so it is easily electrified, attracts dust and can absorb odors.

How to care for flock upholstery?

  • vacuum regularly;
  • try to remove stains with a napkin immediately before they are absorbed;
  • if the stain is absorbed, you need to use a soap solution;
  • Cleaning with alcohol-containing solutions and cleaning with hot water is not recommended, as this can destroy the adhesive layer.

Let's take a closer look at the flock collections presented in our catalog:

Cat and problems with the sofa

Here are just some of the troubles you will have to face:

  • Wool that will constantly cling to the upholstery.
  • Stains.
  • Scratches and claw marks.

Of course, you can spend a lot of time and nerves trying to wean your pet from even approaching upholstered furniture, but, as practice shows, few people succeed. A scratching post, which rarely is used by a cat for its intended purpose, will be of little use.

Types of suitable “vandal-proof” fabric

The kitten sharpens its claws on the sofa.

It may seem that it is enough to opt for a durable, strong fabric, and the problem will be solved. However, there are many nuances in this issue, and manufacturers are offering new developments of fabrics that are not afraid of the claws of pets. The owner can always fail to keep track and forget to trim the cat’s claws.

This material has a non-woven texture, that is, there is no interlacing of threads in it. Accordingly, there is simply nothing to leave a clue on!

  1. Flock or microvelor is perhaps the most common material among cat lovers. An excellent anti-vandal choice. It can also be called a velvet substitute, since it has an external resemblance to it, but the technology for its production is completely different. Flock is characterized by high levels of wear resistance, reliability and strength. In addition, the fabric is impregnated with water and dirt-repellent agents, thanks to which it is quickly and easily cleaned, does not fade in the sun, and does not wrinkle. To make the surface of the sofa look like new, it will be enough to wipe the dirty surface with a damp sponge.
  2. Artificial suede is one of the options for “anti-cat” sofa upholstery. The material successfully combines good wear resistance and decorative qualities, since outwardly it is not much different from natural suede. This upholstery is easy to clean and does not fade over time. If it has been impregnated with Teflon protection, then you should not be afraid of water.
  3. Velor is a soft fleecy fabric that is resistant to various types of mechanical stress, drapes in folds and is pleasant to the touch. When impregnated with special products, such fabric is not afraid of either water or dirt.
  4. Relax is an excellent upholstery option for leather lovers, since the texture of this material is very similar in appearance. Thanks to the unique composition of this fabric, it is possible to restore the structure in a matter of seconds after such minor damage as scratches or puffs. With such upholstery material, you can forget about various stains.

Some useful tips when choosing fabric

If you have a pet, it is better to choose a sofa without wooden inserts.

To prevent cat owners from becoming irritated by damaged furniture, it is necessary not only to choose the fabric for upholstery wisely, but also to ensure that there are no decorative inserts made of natural wood on the sofa or armchairs. Otherwise, they will quickly turn into a convenient cat scratching post.

When choosing furniture, you should also take into account the color of the upholstery, because animals often shed, and even in small quantities, wool will certainly accumulate on the sofa. It is better if the color of the furniture matches the color of the animal’s fur or disguises it as much as possible. In this case, the wool falling on the furniture will be unnoticeable.

If the color of the sofa matches the color of the cat's fur, this is great, because the fur on the sofa will become less noticeable.

Which sofa upholstery fabric is anti-vandal?

Anti-vandal is a dense and soft fabric made mainly from synthetic materials. Its fibers fit tightly together and do not form gaps, which eliminates the possibility of snagging with sharp objects, claws or teeth of pets.

In addition, many anti-vandal fabrics are treated with Teflon, which makes them durable and prevents stains. These include:

  1. Relax. This fabric, composed of cotton fibers and polymers, is ideal for upholstery. It is pleasant to the touch, easily removes mechanical damage, is fire-resistant, and repels moisture and dirt. Any dirt is removed with a cloth soaked in soapy water.
  2. Faux suede. Furniture upholstered with an analogue of suede looks noble and does not wear out for a long time. The fabric is produced in non-woven form and contains cotton and polyester treated with a laminating compound or PVA solution. Artificial suede for furniture is impregnated with Teflon.
  3. Velvet furniture. The fabric is rarely used for upholstery, but many have appreciated it as such. It is wear-resistant and durable, hygienic, pleasant to the body, does not allow dirt to pass through thanks to the lint and is easy to clean with soapy water.
  4. Chenille. Smooth, velvety surface fabric can be natural, artificial or synthetic. Natural chenille is not resistant to damage, but artificial and synthetic ones can withstand all types of vandalism.
  5. Herd. Velvety fabric consists of two layers: a dense base and pile. It is moisture resistant, extremely durable and easy to clean. A special advantage is the noble appearance and hygiene.
  6. Microfiber. A unique material made using the latest technology resembles nubuck and is more resistant to wear.
  7. Scottish. This fabric was developed quite recently, but has already gained recognition. The canvas is maximally protected from moisture, dust, stains and mechanical influences. Usually with bold and colorful prints.

Furniture suede upholstery

In appearance, the artificial type of furniture suede is no different from natural fabric. Its pile is created on the basis of polyester, and then impregnated with a Teflon composition. It has the following properties:

  • increased strength;
  • necessary durability;
  • resistance to wear, abrasion, deformation;
  • practicality, thanks to a simple and easy method of home cleaning;
  • resistant to cat claws.

Buyers value faux suede for its increased durability and practicality, which justify its cost.

Manufacturers and prices

Prices for the material do not differ much, depending on the quality:

  • Flock can be purchased at a price of 790 rubles* per 1 m.
  • Microfiber costs from 900 rubles per m², Galaxy - from 1100 rubles.
  • The courtesan is valued at 850 rubles per 1 m².
  • Velor sells from 1,000 rubles per m², panda velvet costs only 740 per 1 m, eco-velor costs 1,200 rubles.
  • The tapestry is valued at 540 rubles per meter
  • Chenille can be purchased for 900 rubles.
  • Jacquard is estimated at 1,400 rubles per 1 meter
  • Scotchguard will cost 2,500 rubles per m².
  • Faux fur sells for 1,000 rubles per m².

Variety of colors

Varieties

Almost any sliding fabric with a dense weave of fibers can be called anti-vandal. Materials with such characteristics are divided into two groups, depending on the base.

On a non-woven basis

The most popular anti-vandal fabrics for furniture upholstery in this group are flock, relax, and artificial suede. Flock consists of cotton and polyester, an adhesive base, and a layer of nylon or polyamide fibers. The fabric turns out to be quite dense. This prevents furry pets from catching on the surface and damaging it. This fabric with protection against cat claws has the following advantages:

  1. It is tactilely pleasant; sofas with such upholstery are comfortable to use at any time of the year.
  2. The material is easy to care for. To remove dirt, simply wipe the surface of the sofa with a damp sponge or vacuum it.
  3. Long service life. According to the Martindale test, flock goes through about 50 thousand abrasion cycles.

At the same time, there are several significant disadvantages:

  1. When the fabric comes into contact with drinks and other substances containing alcohol, the structure can be significantly damaged.
  2. The flock is highly electrified, attracting dust.
  3. The material stretches after some time. As a result, the anti-vandal fabric loses its shape, forming unsightly waves on the sofa.

Relax is also based on pile and a cotton-polyamide backing. But it has the main difference from flock - a thin layer of isoprene, which gives the surface elasticity. In addition, there is also a special protective layer Antistain, consisting of carbon fiber. Based on the listed properties, the best answer to the question of what upholstery to choose for a sofa if there is a cat in the house is, of course, relaxation. There are several options for the described fabric on the market:

  • classic - has small fibers, an excellent copy of suede;
  • joy – very similar in appearance to flock;
  • Lakshmi is a good choice for those who love leather;
  • Eureka - cannot be distinguished from velvet, but does not have the disadvantages of this material.

Faux suede is the third contender for the best pet-proof sofa cover. It has the following composition: cotton, polyamide, polyester pile, adhesive layer. This anti-vandal material for sofa upholstery has its advantages:

  • allows air to pass through;
  • retains an attractive appearance for a long time.

On a woven basis

Anti-vandal covering for sofas can have a fabric backing. Animal claws can pass right through, but due to the tight weave, they do not leave puffs. A few examples: chenille, microfiber, jacquard, tapestry. The first fabric on the list is formed by intertwining chenille threads in a spiral pattern. The fabric is distinguished not only by the Anti-claw effect, but also by other positive qualities:

  • pleasant to the touch;
  • has a long service life;
  • hypoallergenic.

It is important to remember that chenille easily absorbs moisture, and it takes a lot of time to dry completely. Therefore, the best cleaning method is dry.

Although the material is positioned as anti-vandal, its softness and fluffiness are very attractive to cats. Because of this, the service life is significantly reduced.

The next representative is microfiber. Such a fabric is nothing more than an interweaving of high-density synthetic threads. Due to this, no snags are formed on it, although outwardly the fabric looks thin. Practicality and additional density are provided by the Teflon layer. Externally, microfiber is similar to suede, so sofas with anti-vandal coating made from this material are not only durable, but also attractive.

An equally popular pet-resistant upholstery is jacquard. Often when asked what Anti-Claw fabric is, this material is given as an example. But not ordinary, but impregnated with Scotchgard. The interweaving of the threads in it is much denser. Jacquard is very easy to care for: just wipe with a sponge dipped in soapy water to remove dirt. It does not electrify and looks like expensive fabric.

Tapestry is a fabric that is formed by interlacing jacquard threads. Their thickness, unlike the jacquard itself, is much greater, due to which the fabric is quite dense

The tapestry attracts attention with its variety of patterns and designs.

Chenille

Chenille is a rather complex fabric, which is a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. It occupies a leading position in its class of textile finishing materials, and its main advantages include the following qualities:

  • presence of water- and dirt-repellent impregnation;
  • ease of care and cleaning;
  • the ability to maintain its original appearance for a long time.

Chenille is widely used in the creation of various furniture, due to properties such as durability, simplicity and high aesthetic properties. In our assortment you will find both plain fabrics and fabrics with glossy or plain prints. You can care for this material with either a regular brush or a vacuum cleaner.

Varieties of furniture fabrics by face layer

Depending on the formation of the front layer, fabrics for upholstery of sofas can be divided into two large groups:

  • Woven (chenyl, , , , suede);
  • Non-woven (flock, leatherette).

The pattern on such fabrics, accordingly, can also be woven (weaving colored fibers) and printed (dying the finished plain material).

  • Chenille is a velvety fabric with a complex woven pattern. Manufacturing technology allows the use of up to 18 intertwined threads. Translated from French, the word “chenille” means caterpillar - the basis of the fabric is fluffy fibers. The material perfectly absorbs noise.
  • Tapestry is a one-sided, lint-free fabric made by cross-weaving threads. The manufacturing technique allows you to create beautiful decorative patterns and ornaments.
  • Jacquard is a fabric with a large, raised, repeating pattern or design. Fabric weaving can be simple or complex. Jacquard can be made from both natural and synthetic fibers. This is a very strong and durable material.
  • Boucle is a fabric made from (usually) woolen threads with small knots. Plain weave combines the threads into a distinctive, slightly knobby weave. Also made from viscose and cotton.
  • Artificial suede – imitates . It is more durable and therefore ideal for furniture upholstery. Fabric composition: cotton, polyester, glue and Teflon coating that protects against water and dirt.
  • Leatherette – . It is a combination of a base and a characteristic coating.
  • Flock is a combination of a base made of various materials (polyester, cotton, nylon) and soft pile (also often made of nylon). Flock does not get wet, but allows air to pass through well. This is a dense, wear-resistant material.
  • Furniture fur consists of a woven base (for example, cotton) and long synthetic pile. Imitates natural wool, used to decorate upholstery or entirely to create luxurious upholstered furniture. Very impressive upholstery, but...
  • Velor is a wool fabric with soft, delicate pile. It differs from velvet in having a longer pile. For upholstery, a mixed fabric of wool, cotton and synthetic fibers is used.
  • Microfiber (Velsoft) is made from polyester. This fabric does not pill, dries instantly and does not allow liquid to get under the upholstery.

Microvelour

Microvelor is a soft and velvety fabric, a new generation material with shorter pile compared to traditional velor. The length of the microvelvet pile does not exceed 1 mm, and the base is woven in the form of a honeycomb, due to which it acquires greater strength. Its surface is treated with a coating that protects against dirt.

Characteristics of microsuede:

  • wear-resistant;
  • retains color for a long time;

Everything you need to know about upholstery:

Selecting upholstery materials on your own is not so easy. Here is the type of fabric and its properties: density, wear resistance, etc., there are really a lot of parameters. The choice is also complicated by the purpose of the furniture - different models are needed for a personal office and for a living room. Let's find out which fabric is best for a sofa and what to look for when buying?

Velours

Spectacular velor is one of the favorite coatings of designers. Furniture covered with it looks especially good in classical and neoclassical interiors, and adds nobility and elegance to modern style.

Soft velvet is similar to velvet, and they are in related categories. In another way, velvet is often called velvet, but this is not entirely true.

Velvet is made from cotton or wool, it is natural and environmentally friendly. Its other advantages are practicality, high wear resistance, and does not stretch.

The main disadvantage is that it is very difficult to remove a dirty stain from such a coating on your own.

Universal flock is a non-woven material for upholstery of sofas. It is made by gluing tufts of hair to a base, usually polyamide and viscose, less commonly cotton and wool. It can also be different: natural - made of cotton, synthetic, and there are also mixed options.

In addition to strength and wear resistance, the main advantage of flock is its water resistance. The liquid rolls over the surface into a ball and is easily removed. Therefore, this coating is easy to care for. However, the herd requires frequent vacuuming and is highly electrified, which is why it attracts dust.

It is worth noting that only an expensive product has all these characteristics; a cheap one is unlikely to be practical.

Gozhka

A rug is the most environmentally friendly dense fabric made of linen or cotton, similar to burlap. Fits perfectly into Scandi and Eco interiors, but there are also options with a mixture of acrylic and polyester, which adds strength.

The advantages are obvious: it does not wrinkle, is pleasant to the touch and is very durable. One “but”: the rug can become an object of desire for pets, especially cats, who are not averse to sharpening their claws on it.

Microfiber

It doesn't shed, it doesn't shed, it's easy to wash off dirt, it dries quickly, it doesn't pill, it's microfiber. It was developed a little over 50 years ago, but has already managed to take the lead in the upholstered furniture market. This is not surprising; despite all its advantages, its price is lower than that of similar velor.

How to choose materials for upholstery of a sofa, which is better

When choosing fabric for upholstered furniture, you should pay attention to its origin - artificial or natural, plant or animal origin. This choice is not important, since it does not particularly affect the quality of the material.

It all depends solely on your taste.

It’s also worth finding out about the characteristics of the material you choose. Do you need upholstery fabric that wrinkles? Are such properties important as whether it is water-repellent or breathable? All this can be found out from a sales consultant or read on a special label.

  • In addition, be sure to touch the product. Do you like a smooth surface or a rough one? Matte or shiny? Hard or soft? The main thing is that it should be pleasant to you.
  • The next step is choosing a pattern or not. Think about how to match the sofa upholstery to the interior - striped, checkered, with large or small flowers, or plain. Immediately think about colors. An excellent selection of materials of absolutely any color and with different types of patterns will be shown to you in the catalogs of any relevant store, where numerous photos are presented.
