Cat food Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi Poultry Grain Free

Information on the packaging of Leonardo food

When you first look at the package of this food, your attention is drawn to a spectacular portrait of an adult fluffy cat and chopped pieces of poultry fillet. There is also the inscription Made in Germany, and the absence of cereals in the composition is marked by a design with crossed out ears.

Several instructions on the package relate to the raw meats of the diet. The inscription With Extra Fresh Poultry is more like an advertisement. And large numbers on the packaging indicate not the total meat content (as it may seem to the buyer), but the “origin” of the protein: 80% Animal protein, 20% Plant protein - i.e. 80% of the protein in the guaranteed analysis comes from animal sources, and 20% comes from plant sources.

Description of Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi food base

It’s good that the top five ingredients at least partially indicate the proportions of the components. Ingredient No. 1 - 30% fresh poultry. True, it is unclear what species of bird and in what proportion were added here. The same question arises with regard to component No. 2 - it is called “low-ash poultry protein, dried,” and it is 21% in the diet. The third place is occupied by amaranth, which is essentially a substitute for cereals - it contains 15%. Places No. 4 and No. 5 belong to pea flour and potato starch.

Additives in feed

As an analysis of Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi Poultry food shows, there are also small additions of fish and seafood: 2.5% each of crushed marine zooplankton (krill) and Fish Meal from Seafish. True, it is not clear how the second component turned into herring flour in Russian translation, although this name means “fish meal from sea fish.”

The food contains several relatively rare additives - grape seed flour, chia seeds, Tsaregrad pod, guar gum. You can learn more about their properties, as well as about the more familiar brewer’s yeast, in our ingredients database.

As for the isolated taurine, this supplement, as a rule, indicates that there are not too many meat ingredients in the food, otherwise they would already provide the cat with the required level of this essential amino acid.

This food is preserved using extracts of natural origin with a high content of tocopherol - it’s good that this antioxidant system is natural.

The vitamins and minerals are listed in some detail, but one of the supplements is mistranslated as “selenium (as sodium selenium).” The correct name for this compound is selenite. We have corrected this and added the English name to our Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi Poultry food composition list for clarity.

Customer Reviews

Nadezhda writes:

Our cat recently turned one year old and it’s time to switch to adult food. Before this, I had been eating Leonardo for kittens for two months, so the formula for adults was taken from the same brand. And so, we chose Leonardo Adult Complete 32/16, a 400 g pack costs 323 rubles. There are also packaging sizes of 2, 7.5 and 17 kilograms. For those who don’t know, this food belongs to the super premium class and is manufactured in Germany.

The packaging contains information in Russian and several other languages, which means the food is sold not only in our country. Its composition is decent, without harmful additives, only with natural ingredients. The packaging states that it contains 85% animal protein and 15% plant protein. It is also noted that all ingredients are of high quality and have undergone strict testing under German law.

The food itself is made in the form of small bagels, with a smell characteristic of cat food. The cat eats it with pleasure, just like the one for kittens. Overall, I think this food is excellent, so I recommend you try it.

Inna writes:

Hi all. I bought canned food for my cat at the 4 Paws store and took a jar of Leonardo, Bozita, Mealfeel and Carny to try. In this review I will write about Leonardo, since it was the first to go into use) The price of a jar weighing 190 grams is almost 130 rubles.

After opening, I discovered the following: the jar was filled to the very top, and the pate itself looked quite appetizing. The German manufacturer claims that it contains 65% meat and offal, and the appearance of the pate seems to be true.

The cat ate this pate with great pleasure) The price is not too high, the quality is good, the cat likes it - I recommend Leonardo canned food.

Yana writes:

My cat is already 7 years old, neutered, lives in an apartment, doesn’t run around much. In such conditions, excess weight is gained every once in a while, so I try to regulate it by choosing the optimal diet. I recently tried the German food Leonardo, in which I was attracted by the design of the packaging.

The composition is average, for this money you can find better, but for the promotion the price is normal. Ring-shaped granules, about a centimeter in diameter. The smell is not strong. The food is not solid, the cat chews it easily and eats it very appetizingly. While I ate one package of 2 kg, no problems were found.

Composition and rating of Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi Poultry food: conclusions

Concluding our description of Leonardo Maxi food for large cats, let us note its strengths and weaknesses. Even the key ingredients are listed in general terms: fresh poultry meat, low-ash dried poultry protein, and in addition to these: hydrolyzed poultry liver, poultry fat, dried egg. Extracted starch is also not the most desirable ingredient, but there is a chance that there is still not too much of it in the food. However, it would be better if the manufacturer clearly indicated the percentage of all ingredients, at least in the top five.

The advantages of the product include the presence of 30% fresh poultry in the feed (although, of course, I would like to clearly know its type), the absence of grain, and a natural preservation system.

General characteristics and rating of Leonardo Adult Cat Maxi Poultry Grain Free food are based on the scores of the first five ingredients. The final rating of the food is 20 points out of 55 possible.

Assortment and features of feed

The Leonardo range of dry food is very extensive: there are products for kittens, adult and elderly cats, as well as for overweight, low-activity, and long-haired animals. In addition, grain-free food is produced, which is offered for pets with sensitive digestion and large breed cats. The line of wet food is divided into only two age categories: for kittens and adult animals, but at the same time it has a wide variety of tastes.

Spiders Leonardo

Compound

The line of spiders has a wider range, there are 12 types. Let's immediately look at the composition of the spiders:

Calf + Vegetables – veal heart, lungs, kidneys (36.5%), poultry, heart, liver (30%), veal broth, poultry (28.3%), carrots (4%), dried eggshells (0.5%), minerals (0.5%), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • In the first place are by-products obtained from veal - a very rare component of animal feed, because the purchase price of veal meat is higher than that of beef and much more expensive than chicken. Therefore, it is quite clear that there is no veal as such in the food, the question is - why not call the spider “veal offal and vegetables”? There is a hint of slight deception in the product name, and it is not very pleasant. However, veal entrails are no less valuable.
  • Kidneys and heart belong to the by-products of the first category; they contain a large amount of animal protein and almost no fat. The kidneys are enriched with selenium, and the heart with iron and copper. The lungs fall into the second category, but contain large amounts of collagen, which is beneficial for joints.
  • Veal broth can hardly be considered a complete source of protein, but it is a good natural flavor enhancer.
  • The hodgepodge of poultry meat is somewhat depressing, even though we are talking about muscle tissue. However, the exact animal origin of this component is questionable. The feed also contains the heart and liver of poultry.
  • A little carrot is added as a source of coarse plant fibers - they will help regulate digestion. Dried eggshells are a natural source of easily digestible calcium.
  • But they spared salmon oil - its mass fraction is so small that one can hardly expect any real benefit from it.

Duck + Cheese – duck meat, liver, heart (30%), chicken heart, liver (28.5%), duck, chicken, beef broth (28.3%), beef lung (8%), cheese cubes ( 4%), minerals (1%), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • Duck meat and its offal are a great option for animals with food allergies. Duck protein is rich in its unique amino acid composition and is well absorbed by cats.
  • Chicken giblets are more allergenic, but have good nutritional value and contain little fat and a high amount of protein.
  • The broth will increase the palatability of the food and satisfy the animal’s need for life-giving moisture; beef lung is an excellent source of collagen.
  • It is interesting that the cheese in the composition is indicated in the form of cubes - although the type of cheese is unknown to us, and the cheese itself is a little fatty for cats, you should not be afraid of it - only 4% will not harm the animal, but most likely such food will be of interest to a picky, selective cat.

Fish & Shrimp – salmon (30%), herring, salmon, shrimp broth (29.3%), herring (18%), shrimp (12%), poultry liver (10%), minerals (0.5% ), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • The salmon in the feed is most likely a fresh or thawed carcass, with no signs of decomposition. This fish is very valuable - because with a modest amount of fat, it contains a lot of easily digestible protein and Omega-3 essential fatty acids.
  • The food will certainly appeal to cats who love to feast on fish - a broth of herring, salmon and shrimp will give the product an attractive taste and aroma.
  • Herring is one of the fattest fish, with a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (but of course, subject to high quality raw materials).
  • Shrimp are very valuable crustacean creatures, and quite expensive, so their mass share in animal feed is small. It is not known from the name what type of shrimp is present in the food, but nevertheless, shrimp contain a lot of iodine, sodium and phosphorus, and are also a high-protein product, being virtually fat-free.
  • Poultry liver is not the worst ingredient, but we don't know what kind of bird it came from, which somewhat undermines the credibility of this ingredient.

Kangaroo + Catnip – kangaroo meat, heart, liver, lungs, kidneys (30%), chicken meat, liver, heart (30%), kangaroo, chicken, beef broth (28.7%), beef lung (10%) , minerals (1%), salmon oil (0.2%), catnip (0.1%).

  • It is impossible not to discuss such an exotic type of meat as kangaroo meat - a rather rare ingredient in animal feed (in Australia, where this meat is often purchased specifically as food for pets). Kenguryat and its by-products have antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties and are considered environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic products.
  • Chicken and chicken giblets are more allergenic, but they are the most affordable and fairly high-quality raw materials for feed.
  • Broth made from kangaroo, chicken and beef is used as a natural flavor.
  • Beef lung is a good low-fat source of animal protein and collagen.
  • A little catnip as a seasoning won't hurt your cat. Although it seems to us that most cats will like this food even without mint.

Kitten Poultry – poultry, heart, liver, gizzard (70%), poultry broth (29.1%), minerals (0.5%), salmon oil (0.4%).

  • And again our “favorite” poultry, its giblets and broth - a mixture of raw gutted carcasses with skin. It can be worse, of course, although a little specifics would not hurt. But 70% of more or less designated meat and meat by-products, you know, are expensive. But without beaks and hooves!
  • Salmon oil is not enough; for the younger cat generation they might be generous.

Lamb + Cranberries – lamb meat, heart, liver, lung, kidneys (36.5%), poultry meat, heart, liver (30%), lamb and poultry meat broth (28.3%), cranberries (4 %), dried eggshells (0.5%), minerals (0.5%), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • Lamb is an integral part of the diet for allergic animals, as well as pets with digestive problems. An excellent low-calorie source of protein and essential amino acids. The food also contains the poultry and broth discussed above.
  • Many people attribute properties to cranberries that help prevent urolithiasis, although this effect has not been scientifically proven.
  • Eggshells are a natural source of calcium and other beneficial substances.

Meat Menu – chicken meat, liver, stomach (29%), beef meat, heart (29%), chicken, beef, lamb broth (29.3%), lamb lungs (12%), minerals (0.5% ), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • This pouch is based on chicken - meat and entrails, as well as similar beef products. These are high-quality sources of complete protein and healthy amino acids - no complaints.
  • The broth will add flavor and serve as a good source of water.
  • Lamb lungs are a tender and dietary product that contains virtually no fat, but a lot of protein and collagen, which is beneficial for joints.

Poultry + Egg – poultry, heart, liver (60%), poultry broth, beef (28.3%), beef lung (6.5%), whole egg (4%), minerals (1%) , salmon oil (0.2%).

  • Again, the meat of unidentified poultry and its giblets, a decoction of it and beef, and beef lung. It’s good that we are still talking about muscle tissue, and the by-products are not bad.
  • A whole egg is, by default, the white and yolk of a chicken egg - the most nutritious and highly digestible source of animal protein and beneficial amino acids.

Pure Beef - beef meat, heart, lung, liver, kidneys (70%), beef broth (29.3%), minerals (0.5%), salmon oil (0.2%).

This pouch consists of 70% beef and beef by-products of categories 1 and 2, plus 29.3% aromatic beef broth. The components are of quite high quality. We can only find fault with the fact that the mass fraction of each ingredient is not written, only the total is indicated.

Pure Chicken – chicken meat, heart, liver, gizzard (70%), chicken broth (29.3%), minerals (0.5%), salmon oil (0.2%).

An ideal spider for those who like to eat chicken - it contains 70% meat and giblets. The situation is similar to the previous beef pouch: the total share of chicken products is indicated, and how much of what is in the feed is anyone’s guess.

Rabbit + Cranberries – rabbit meat, heart, liver, lungs, kidneys (30%), chicken meat, liver, heart (30%), rabbit, chicken, beef broth (28.3%), beef lung (6.5 %), cranberry (4%), minerals (1%), salmon oil (0.2%).

  • Rabbit is a healthy and most dietary alternative to chicken and beef. Its tender meat contains a huge amount of complete protein, healthy amino acids and little fat. The same can be said about rabbit offal.
  • The rabbit is supplemented with a delicious multi-meat broth and beef lung, which contains a lot of protein and collagen.
  • The food is lightly flavored with cranberries, which may naturally acidify urine, although its healing functions are questionable.

Trout + Catnip – trout (30%), chicken heart, liver (30%), trout, chicken, beef broth (28.7%), beef lung (10%), minerals (1%), salmon oil (0 .2%), catnip (0.1%).

  • Trout is not very often found in animal feed - the fish is not cheap, but it is certainly healthy. There is little fat in it, and what is there is enriched with healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, and its protein is well absorbed by cats.
  • The fish is supplemented with valuable chicken giblets and flavored with aromatic broth. Beef lung is an additional source of animal protein and healthy collagen.
  • A pinch of catnip will appeal to cats who go crazy for it, and will not harm those who are not interested in it.

Conclusion

As you can see, the situation is much clearer than in canned food. Yes, of course, not every component has an indication of the percentage; the manufacturer is cunning when it combines meat with by-products and indicates their total content in the feed. But we see animal components designated as meat; offal is no longer an incomprehensible mess - we clearly see where the kidneys are, where the lungs are, where the liver is. Please note that the offal is quite high quality and nutritious. We also see what the broth was made from - of course, it was most likely made from carcasses with bones.

All spiders contain salmon oil, here the situation is the same as in canned food - its mass fraction is too small to expect real benefits from it. In addition, it is not indicated what the fat was preserved with - perhaps it was vitamin E, which is present in the mineral composition.

Skepticism is also caused by cranberry and catnip in the composition.

  • Many people attribute properties to cranberries that acidify urine and help prevent urolithiasis, although this fact has not been scientifically proven.
  • And we don’t like the presence of catnip in principle, although in small quantities it is safe for cats and is added as a seasoning, but a large number of meat components themselves perfectly attract a cat, and it is quite possible to do without mint.
