Pharmacological properties
Bayer (Bayer) Profender Spot-On - Profender has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic action on round and tape helminths, including Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipylidium caninum, Taenia taeniaeformis, parasitizing cats. Emodepside, which is part of the drug, is a semi-synthetic compound from the group of depsipeptides and has a nematocidal effect. By exerting a stimulating effect on presynaptic latrophilin receptors, emodepside causes paralysis and death of the parasite. The mechanism of action of praziquantel is the depolarization of neuromuscular ganglion blockers, disruption of glucose transport and microturbular function of all phases of cestode development, causing disruption of neuromuscular innervation, paralysis and death of parasites. The pharmacokinetic properties of the drug ensure its good absorption from the site of application and long-term preservation in therapeutic concentrations in the animal’s body. Maximum concentrations of praziquantel and emodepside are observed in the blood serum after 2–4 days; compounds are excreted from the body mainly in urine in unchanged form and partially in metabolized form within 28-30 days. Bayer (Bayer) Profender Spot-On - Based on the degree of impact on the body, Profender is classified as a moderately hazardous substance (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses it does not have locally irritating, embryotoxic, teratogenic, mutagenic and immunotoxic effects. The drug is well tolerated by cats of different breeds in a therapeutic dose and in a 3-fold therapeutic dose.
Stages of exposure to the parasite:
- The nervous system of the parasite is damaged.
- He enters a state of paralysis and can no longer hold himself in the intestines.
- Worms are expelled through the anus.
After penetration into the body, the active substances are distributed to all its parts thanks to the vascular system. The maximum concentration in blood plasma is achieved within 2 - 3 days. After about 1 month, the components of the drug are completely eliminated through urine and feces.
Doses and method of administration
Before use, remove the protective cap from the pipette and, positioning it vertically, pierce the protective membrane of the pipette nose (putting the cap on the back side), then remove the cap again. The drug, by spreading the fur, is applied to places inaccessible for licking, directly on the skin between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. When treating large cats, the contents of the pipettes are applied to the skin in the neck area in several places. The minimum therapeutic dose of Bayer Profender Spot-On is 0.14 ml/kg of animal weight. Deworming of cats using Bayer (Bayer) Profender Spot-On - Profender is carried out starting from 8 weeks of age, in the following doses: Weight of the cat, kg, marking and volume of pipettes used: - from 0.5 to 2.5 "Bayer ( Bayer) Profender Spot-On - Profender for small cats - 0.35 ml;

How many treatments for complete cure?
It all depends on the purpose of use. This is described in detail in the instructions:

- If Profender is applied for preventive purposes, then the drops are used once every 3 months.
But in particularly difficult situations, veterinarians recommend repeating the application of the drug two weeks after the first use.
For preventive purposes, it is important not to miss time once every 3 months.

In the case of a kitten, the situation is a little more complicated. Treatment with a profender is allowed starting from 2 months, provided the animal weighs at least 0.5 kg.

Medicines for nematodes or roundworms
Nematodes are worms that have a non-segmented body in the shape of a thread or spindle, round in cross section. The most common parasites in the human body are pinworms, Toxocara, Trichinella, and whipworm. Most varieties of nematodes parasitize the digestive system. Among them, the most common are pinworms and roundworms. Medicines intended for the treatment of nematodes and their analogues:
- Pyrantel pamoate – Nemotsid, Pyrantel, Helmintox, Combantrin;
- Levamisole – Decaris;
- Albendazole – Vormil, Nemozol, Gelmodol-VM (in the form of chewable tablets and suspension);
- Piperazine adipate – Piperazine;
- Pyrvinium embonate – Vanquin, Pyrkon, Pyrivinium;
- Mebendazole – Thermox, Wormin, Vermakar, Vermox, Vero-Mebendazole, Mebex;
- Carbendacim – Medamin.
Nematodes occurring outside the digestive tract are treated with the following tablets:
- Ivermectin - Baymek, Ivermek, Ivomek.
- Diethylcarbamazine – Ditrazine, Ditrazine citrate.
Antihelminthic therapy has a very important feature - deworming tablets are taken in several courses. Most often, two times are enough. This is due to the fact that the active substance of most of these drugs acts only on adult individuals, without affecting their eggs and larvae. In addition, with enterobiasis there are frequent cases of reinvasion (self-infection).
Worms belonging to the group of cestodes are the culprits of a wide range of helminthic infestations: these are alveococcosis, echinococcosis, sparganosis, taeniasis, cysticercosis (pathogen - pork tapeworm), teniarinhoz, coenurosis, taeniasis (pathogen - bovine tapeworm), diphyllobothriasis (pathogen - broad tapeworm) , hymenolepiasis (pathogen - dwarf tapeworm).
Medicines for the treatment of cestodiasis and their analogues:
- Akrikhin (Mepakrin) - used for taeniasis, hymenolepiasis, diphyllobothriasis, giardiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria;
- Niclosamide (Fenasal) - used for invasion by all types of cestodes;
- Albendazole (Nemozol) is used for mixed invasions, including in combination with giardiasis, echinococcosis, neurocysticercosis, and for the treatment of extraintestinal forms of cestodiasis.
Why is deworming necessary?
Deworming is a set of actions and measures that are aimed at ridding an animal of worms and preventing its re-infection. Secondary invasion is more than likely because the development cycle of helminths from egg to adult is about 4 months.
During cat hygiene procedures, the possibility of infection with worms is 100%. Therefore, it is necessary to deworm a cat often - at least 3-4 times a year.
Infection with worms is the most “popular nuisance” even among domestic cats. In fact, this serious problem can cause significant damage to your pet's health.
In the process of development and reproduction, worms feed on the tissues of internal organs, the blood of the animal, disrupt the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, and undermine the immune system.
An infected cat becomes a source of danger for family members. Children are especially defenseless against helminthic infestations. To protect the family from infection, a domestic cat should be dewormed regularly and not wait for obvious manifestations of the disease.
A few more reasons why it is necessary to worm your pets systematically:
- cats are constantly infected with worms: when they eat raw meat, fish, offal, pick up pieces of food from the floor, and also during cat washing;
- waste from worms poisons the body of an infected cat and undermines its health;
- some worms are able to overcome the placental barrier and infect kittens in utero, this often leads to the birth of weakened offspring or their death;
- infected cats are emaciated, stunted, and suffer from anemia.
Can be used if the cat is pregnant
Thanks to the method of use, a pregnant cat does not suffer in any way from the use of Profender.
- In addition, the fetus remains completely safe.
- But the drug is applied with extreme caution so as not to frighten the animal.
- After this, you need to be patient during the cat bathing process, since the remaining drops must be washed off after 2 hours.
