There are situations when you need to know how to catch a cat on the street. After all, during such a meeting, sometimes you want to help and pick up a lost or homeless animal. However, there is not always an idea of how this can be done. The reasons why a dog or cat runs away are the period of sexual desire, curiosity. Often owners leave their pets outside and walk away. If in the first situations the owner is looking for a pet, then when moving out he will have to take the cat home or give it to a new owner or to a shelter.
Is it worth catching other people's cats?
Pets end up on the street by accident: they fall out of a window or slip through an open door. They don’t find their way home and become homeless. It is worth catching the fugitive in order to return it to the owner. Such individuals make contact; people are familiar to them.
Street cats are not easy to catch because they are wild.
Sometimes other people's cats are caught and taken to an animal shelter or taken into foster care. These are noble goals that justify cat traps in basements and near trash cans.
As a rule, there are no other reasons to catch a cat.
Note! Catching is always fraught with risk - a stressed cat is capable of biting and using its claws. Living on the street, he could catch infection, infections, insects.
Hide the trigger plate
The cat may have learned to recognize the plate covering the hatch and learn how to avoid it. To prevent her from tiptoeing on and around the dish, try covering it and some of the bottom of the trap in front and behind it with newspaper or cloth.
Or cut a piece of cardboard slightly narrower than the width of your trap and a couple of inches longer than the trigger plate. Tape the cardboard to the middle of the plate and loosely to the bottom of the trap. Cats won't be able to step over the trigger so easily!
What to consider when catching a cat
How to wash a cat: options if he is afraid of water and scratches
The health status of street vagabonds is questionable. To protect yourself, approach the matter thoroughly:
- prepare traps and treats;
- wear protective clothing with long sleeves and gloves;
- They observe the behavior and habits of the tramp: where he lives most often, what kind of treat he likes.
Important! Animals feel threatened and resist. Aggression is a reaction to fear, not a character trait, and therefore should not repel the future owner.

How to catch a street cat that is afraid of people
Pets are driven outside by curiosity and sexual instinct. At such moments they often find themselves homeless. Sometimes people deliberately throw tailed animals into the world to fend for themselves. It is difficult to understand the motives, however, the domestic cat ends up in the company of stray animals.
How to find a cat if it has run away or is lost on the street
Before catching, it is important to understand whether the individual is on the street or lost. The method of capture depends on this. From the outside, this is not always easy to understand.
Note! A stray cat fed by compassionate people often looks clean, well-fed, and well-groomed. If the animal is not starving, its fur is neat. Hardening and good immunity help resist infections and parasites. Therefore, the chosen individual is observed for at least a week.
How to distinguish a street tramp from a lost one:
- The cat spends several days in the gateway in the evening and at night. If the owner let him out for a walk, the animal would return home at night;
- The kitten is wearing a flea collar. This is a sign of home keeping. Before a walk, owners protect their pet from insects;
- A tag with an address and telephone number was found. Owners anticipate the possibility that the furry one will get lost. To make the search easier, caring owners microchip their pets;
- if, having met a stranger, the kitten is timid but makes contact, it is domestic. He associates a two-legged creature with warmth and food. A wild animal runs from people.
External signs also tell us that the cat is domestic, but feral, or homeless since birth. The second type is more difficult and dangerous to deal with.
What does appearance indicate:
- The paw pads are soft - the cat lived with a family and did not walk much on the bare ground. Hard, trampled paws indicate street origin;
- clean eyes and ears, well-groomed claws - home inspection. Wounds, scratches - the cat defends its life in a severe struggle;
- There are no signs of castration or sterilization in wild individuals.
Observation and conclusions help to find the right way to catch a cat in a trap.
Cat carrier
Carrying and special cages for cats
Pets travel with their owners to the countryside or on vacation. This cat will go in a pet carrier. He will remember the sensations and will go into the cage if there is food there.
The floors in some models are designed in such a way that the door slams shut when an animal steps on them. If this is an ordinary carrier, then you should not slam the door yourself, as cats have a quick reaction and the animal will run away. It’s better to tie a string to the door, stay in ambush, and close the trap by pulling the rope.
Another option is that veterinary clinics and nurseries have cage traps. The device is rented for the duration of the capture. You need to lure the tramp with the fragrant food inside.
Important! When the four-legged dog falls for the trick, the cage is covered with thick fabric so that the kitten can rest in the dark and come to its senses.
Trap for a stray cat
A bag, blanket, or canvas are not suitable for the job. Extreme methods will scare the wildling. Although stress passes quickly in cats, they remember evil for a long time, so it will be difficult to establish contact in the future.
They resort to fishing gear. The net is fixed on a tree and food is placed under it. When the gullible, hungry mouser begins to eat, the tied ropes are pulled and the net covers the animal.
A fishing landing net is also used. A large triangular net is suitable for catching cats. They cover the animal with it, sneaking up unnoticed.
Note! The designs of the pots are made from scrap materials: boxes, cardboard boxes, basins.
Not all cats love valerian
Valerian for cats
The root of the valerian plant contains actinidin extract. The substance has an effect on the central nervous system of cats. This is not a sedative. Having sniffed, the ward falls into a state of drug intoxication - euphoria.
Important! Large doses lead to diarrhea and vomiting.
To lure a cat, soak a toy or a rag with valerian. When the animal relaxes and falls into a trance, it is picked up with bare hands.

Leisure Animals Cats Entertainment
It happens that ordinary entertainment with a cat becomes boring. I would like to arrange something like this and have a lot of fun with my pet! We offer a fresh idea that will help you diversify the time spent with your cat.
Don't miss the opportunity to puzzle this cute creature - the surprised cat will have a lot of fun.
Cat trap
- First, build a simple trap using available materials.
- Wait until a bright detail catches the attention of your pet tiger.
- Fingers crossed, it seems the cat really doesn’t suspect anything...
- Hey-hey!!! Do you see that surprised expression on his face? He's charming.
- Now let’s look at the action of the trap one more time from the outside, so that you, completely imbued with the idea, will bring it to life for yourself and your cat, to the delight of you!
Did you like this entertaining tip? Tell everyone who has cats about it!
If someone wants to do a noble deed, catch all the cats and female cats and have them spayed and neutered. You can take something from a domestic well-groomed cat, but from these garbage cats, who have been savages for several generations, there are only problems and infection.
Cats may look cute and cuddly, but don't underestimate them. If cats feel threatened, they can be fast, agile and tough with their sharp claws and teeth. It's easy to mistakenly think the same thing about feral cats that live near your home. Unfortunately, stray cats are not nearly as harmless to each other and to others. Summer residents live nearby in the summer; they got a cat, she is several years old. They leave, and she is left to fend for herself.
It is necessary to feed and can be tamed, we also had a feral cat with kittens living on our hacienda, there were rat skins lying around... She fed the kittens, they didn’t touch her, then she began to hunt openly. It is not the cat that needs to be poisoned, but its owners who abandon it. If you have a cat, then don’t mind a bowl of milk. And if it’s a cat, think carefully. Our domestic cat lambed outside in the summer, on the roof, and we couldn’t get the kittens.
How to catch a cat at home
Friends at home do not like to travel, but they get used to moving with their owners. Intuition tells them that a trip is coming as soon as the owners begin to prepare for the road. Cats hide, sometimes so successfully that there is no other means except to lure the cat.
The dog is afraid of a thunderstorm: what to do and how to calm it down
Cats hide in a secluded corner and are afraid of strangers. Finding and luring out an animal in an apartment is not difficult. You just need to not open the doors to the balcony and staircase, as the cat will slip through unnoticed.
Note! They lure their friend out of the shelter with tasty cat food. Dry food does not dissipate the flavor, so they offer canned food, sausage, and boiled meat. Pets are most willing to eat canned fish.
The bait is finely chopped, the bones are removed, and laid out on plates. The kitten's name is with a friendly intonation. The irritation in the voice will cause the cat to retreat even further.
A cat's sense of smell is 14 times stronger than a human's. Seduced by the aroma of food, the animal will give itself away.
The best bait for a cat
Treats will help attract the cat. Which one is best to choose? If you catch your runaway pet, be guided by its food preferences. A universal option is ready-made food. Dry formulas for feeding cats are considered more convenient to use. You will appreciate all their advantages as soon as you try to lure out a cat hiding in a secluded place. Wet canned food is more fragrant, and all kinds of pates and soufflés for cats are a real delicacy. Many animal experts answer the question: “How to catch your neighbor’s cat by luring him with food?” — they advise trying to interest your cat in canned fish.
You can also use fish, seafood, meat, and sausages as bait. Be sure to finely chop the selected product. If you are giving meat or fish, first boil a piece and remove all bones. You should not feed your cat milk and dairy products. It is unknown who came up with the myth about cats’ love for this product. In fact, not all cats love milk. In addition, its consumption harms the digestive system of these animals.
Personal safety measures when catching a cat
A small kitten is lured out with a rustling candy wrapper tied on a string. Children who are playful by nature will rush to the model, mistaking it for a mouse. All that remains is to lift the lump by the scruff of the neck and quickly press it to your chest.
Adults, despite their hunting instinct, will not fall for this. Cautious, taught by negative experiences, they use ingenuity to escape. You will need equipment for catching with bait.
Important! The cat catcher must protect against injuries and scratches. Wild animals can be infected with contagious diseases.
To catch, you need to wear thick gloves and a tight suit, which you won’t mind throwing away later. Sharp claws should not reach the skin.
Pet carrier
A cat carrier can also be used as a catching device. It must be of good quality, made of hard plastic, equipped with a metal door and lid. The presence of these elements will allow you to use the basket according to the boiler principle. The removable lid will make it easier for the veterinarian when removing the animal from the carrier.
When catching homeless revelers, different goals may be pursued, but the principles of approach remain the same. If you live in a private house, you have a vegetable garden and a farm, then, of course, you do not need uninvited guests in the form of a wild predator. This comparison is quite appropriate for a feral cat. After all, it can cause harm to the household, for example, steal birds, and also trample down beds on a plot of land. If you find yourself in this situation, you most likely want to know how to catch a feral cat in your yard. Using a pet carrier is a very suitable option.
Luring a freedom-loving guest into a cage is not so easy. First you have to tame her a little. Only on favorable terms will the animal become more flexible. Pay attention to which side it enters the yard, and start placing food in a bowl approximately in this place twice a day. Place an open cage at a decent distance. Be patient, the luring process will take some time. When the predator begins to regularly feed on your site, begin to gradually move the bowl of food towards the carrier, then place it on the threshold, etc. The door should be closed only when you are sure of success. If you miss, all efforts will be in vain, and winning the animal’s trust a second time is very problematic, almost impossible.
What to do when a cat is caught
It’s especially pitiful for a street dweller in bad weather, when he’s shivering in a wet fur coat. The eyes beg for help, good people decide to catch and take in the poor fellow.
First steps after capture.
A stray cat should first be shown to a veterinarian.
Veterinary examination
At the clinic, a specialist will determine the breed. In cities there live cats, whose ancestors in the 1st-3rd generation were pets. They make contact and are taken into the family.
In the rural outback, emaciated forest and reed cats attach themselves to human habitation. Representatives of wild fauna are returned to nature. The exception is sick and old individuals. But they are taken into yard care, placed in enclosures, and fed.
The doctor will examine the city tramp for wounds, scratches, broken limbs, disinfect sores, scabs, check the skin and fur for ticks, lice, fleas - ectoparasites. If the latter are present, then the specialist will prescribe drops, sprays, and care products.
The doctor will take tests for intestinal helminths - endoparasites. After a visit to the clinic, a street kitten is given a bath and immediately treated for worms.
Note! The foundling is placed in a quarantine block for two weeks. At home, this is a separate room where the new resident is provided with peace, food, and their health and behavior are monitored. Make sure there are no open windows, as the cat will run away.
If he eats well, the fur is shiny, the eyes and mucous membranes are clean and pink, there is no smell from the ears, after 14-15 days the new resident is released into the apartment. It is not dangerous for children and other pets.
Next come scheduled visits to the veterinarian - the course of vaccination begins, which is mandatory for the cat family. These are vaccinations against rabies, calcivirus, chlamydia, etc.
Taming a kitten
If you bring a kitten into your home that has recently been thrown outside, it is not difficult to adapt it. He will quickly remember a person’s affection, will be grateful for food, and will soon become a pet.
It’s more difficult with a resident of the gateway, who was born from the same mother. But education and taming are a matter of time and patience. You need to work on the student.
The quarantine period is used to socialize the new resident. They show him friendliness, affectionately call him by his name, which is given to him as he was brought home.
At first, the pet is visited 2 times a day at the same time. They bring food and toys. Place the bowl on the floor and place your hand next to it. You can hold the treat in the palm of your hand. They call the animal, wait for it to come and try the treat.
Check readiness for contact - hold your hand above your head. If there is horror in your eyes and the cat hisses, you should not put pressure on the animal. If you are calm, you can pat him on the back.
Every time you enter a room, they knock on the door. The cat will soon realize that there is no threat and will begin to rub against his legs. A good sign is that adaptation is going well. Gradually they begin to be picked up. The first unsuccessful attempts are associated with stress.
Cats have different personalities. Some individuals never become furry, affectionate companions. But all felines can be domesticated. The main thing is not to be rude. But they immediately teach the prohibition commands “Ugh!” and “You can’t!”, which are accompanied by a clap of the palm.
Note! They instill one good habit after another: going to the toilet in a litter box, not stealing food, not climbing on tables.
Every pet should have cat toys.
What does a cat need at home?
The cat will feel loved and needed if you create the right conditions for it. What does a street dweller need:
- isolated room. There is a storage room, a balcony, and a bathroom. In a closed room there should be a tray, food, water;
- protection from strangers. First, the person who fed and caught it communicates with the foundling. Other family members and pets have short contact;
- own care and hygiene products: brushes, scratching posts, baths;
- toys. Varied and colorful, they attract your pet and don’t let you get bored.
Important! The main thing that owners must provide for a kitten brought into their home is love.
Tray training
This problem is faced not only by those who picked up a kitten on the street. Animal sellers often claim that babies are toilet trained. But often this is not true. We have to get down to business ourselves and teach the baby one of the most necessary skills for living in an apartment.
During the process of training a pet, it is advisable that the kitten is always under the supervision of its owners. Observation will minimize the likelihood of puddles appearing in inappropriate places. Every successful trip to the litter tray requires praise and petting.
A successful trip to the litter box should be encouraged
Instructions for kittens
The tray should have a small side, since a small kitten will not be able to climb into a high toilet. Use clean water to rinse the container. If a fragrance is used, the smell should be subtle. To make the task easier, you need to soak a piece of cloth or paper in the urine of this kitten and put it in the tray. Then the baby will follow his scent. To toilet train a kitten, you can use special products that are sold in pet stores.
Tool for training a cat to use the tray
Determining that a kitten wants to go to the toilet is quite simple: it starts to fidget and loses its calm. At this point it needs to be moved to the tray. To better make it clear that an unfamiliar object is intended for bowel movements, you can scratch the surface of the tray with your finger. When urination or bowel movements begin, talk to the kitten in a gentle tone, thereby encouraging its correct actions.
The baby should be carried to the tray every time after waking up or eating. Having planted it in the tray, you need to make sure that it makes raking movements in the filler.
Instructions for an adult cat
Problems may arise with an older cat. Here are the rules that will help you change your habits. The best place for the tray is a bathroom, toilet room, or insulated balcony. But no matter where the owner places the toilet, it is necessary to ensure constant access to it for the pet, especially if he is often left at home alone.
It is more difficult to train an adult cat to use a litter box.
If the cat lived outside before, then it is accustomed to the open space. Therefore, the tray must be large enough. Veterinarians recommend trays with high sides for adult cats so that the litter does not spill on the floor when it is raked after bowel movements or bladder. An alternative option is a toilet house.
Closed toilet house
Usually, animals themselves intuitively understand the purpose of the structure with filler. But if this does not happen, you need to make it clear where to relieve yourself. There are several options. When the cat chooses a place to defecate, you need to quickly place a tray under it, stroke it and move away. It may be that the animal will run away. But it needs to be returned to its place and the action repeated until the process comes to its logical conclusion.
For wild cats, you can try a lawn toilet
The smell of her urine will also guide your cat. To do this, as in the case of a kitten, a piece of cloth or paper soaked in urine is thrown into the tray.
Reasons for refusing a tray
Refusal to relieve yourself in a specified place can be provoked not only by the stubbornness of the animal, but also by other reasons:
- health problems;
- inconvenient tray format or size;
- choosing the wrong place;
- untimely cleaning of the toilet;
- the need to share a tray with another pet.
If the owner tries, the cat will sooner or later get used to its new toilet and stop shitting anywhere.
Each pet gets a separate tray
Surface treatment products for urine odor
But in case of failure, you cannot scold, much less beat, your pet - he may get scared, and such a measure will not bring any benefit. The area itself is treated with anti-urine odor products.
If a kitten makes a puddle, it should not be beaten or scolded.

How to wean a cat off the street
So that the tramp is not drawn to his usual habitat, he is surrounded by care. What the new owners are doing:
- create comfortable living conditions - a sleeping house, a place for games, a tray;
- They take you out to the balcony for a walk. First take care of mosquito nets and bars on windows;
- several trays are placed, the pet chooses where it is convenient for him to go to the toilet;
- well fed. The diet will be agreed upon with the veterinarian;
- castrate and sterilize animals;
- playing with a kitten.
Note! The cat is taken out into the yard in a carrier bag and is not left unattended.
Stray cats are pathetic creatures. When there is a desire to take the sufferer home, they find out whether it is a neighbor’s pet. They are caught using carriers and special traps. Maintain personal safety, as the cat may be infected with worms and external parasites. They organize quarantine at home and at the same time tame the cat. Patience and love turn a homeless child into an affectionate pet.
Use a drip eliminator
If a standard box trap just won't do it, try using a drip trap. It's a large mesh box that you prop up and launch manually using a rope. Be sure to place the drip trap on a level surface and have a partner, as the size of the traps makes them difficult to handle alone. Prop the trap with a wooden stick or a full bottle tied with rope, leaving enough rope so that you can hide a few meters away and hold the end of it.
Bait the trap with plenty of food in case cats you don't want to catch wander in before your target. Don't trigger the trap until your target cat is inside; if she sees other cats trapped, she will stay away! Once you have set the trap and caught the desired cat, immediately cover it with a sheet and prepare a trap box. Move the cat into a trap box to make it easier to contain and transport.
Veterinary examination
A medical examination is required, regardless of whether the cat was previously domestic or not. Only a specialist can properly conduct an examination and detect diseases, including fatal ones. Carrying a street cat home without inspection is dangerous, since not only the health of other pets is at risk, but also the owners themselves and their children.
The cat is immediately taken to the veterinarian
Attention! If a visit to the doctor is planned less than 12 hours after capture, then feeding is not carried out, only clean water is given.
If the doctor does not find any diseases, the animal is treated for fleas and worms. It happens that there is no veterinarian nearby. This happens in remote settlements. Then the animal is sent to quarantine. The cat is isolated in a separate room or at least a cage to prevent contact with other residents of the house. But it should be remembered that some infections are transmitted by airborne droplets - for example, calcivirus. The cat is given dishes for food and drink, and a separate tray is placed.
The first three weeks require quarantine
The duration of preventive isolation is 14-21 days. During this period, the animal is observed, behavior, appetite, and appearance are assessed.
Table 1. Dangerous symptoms when examining a cat in quarantine.
Name of organ, system | Violations |
Wool, leather | Bald patches, growths, dandruff, peeling, neoplasms |
Eyes | Tearing, discharge, redness, swelling of the eyelids, incomplete opening of the palpebral fissure, visibility of the third eyelid |
Respiratory system | Runny nose, pus from the nose or crust around the nostrils, trouble breathing |
Ears | Abundance of sulfur, crust, especially in combination with an unpleasant odor |
Musculoskeletal system | Lameness, unnatural position of limbs, etc. |
Nervous system | Fear of light, water, depression, apathy |
Digestive system | Appetite disturbances, diarrhea, bad smell of stool, presence of pus, blood, and other foreign products in it |
Mucous membranes | Blueness or yellowness |
urinary system | Bad smell of urine, presence of blood in it |
They check the condition of the internal organs by feeling the stomach and observing the cat’s reaction. It is also a good idea to measure your body temperature. The norm is considered to be 38...39 °C.
The cat should have its body temperature measured
If any signs of disease or infection are found, then you should find an opportunity and still show the cat to the veterinarian. At home, without special tests, it is impossible to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe therapy. In severe cases, this can lead to the rapid death of the animal.
Attention! If an animal shows signs of rabies, approaching it is life-threatening! In such cases, immediately contact the sanitary and epidemiological station or veterinary service.
HOW TO CATCH WILD CATS. Brief Instructions. Catch and sterilize!
4 messages
On the eve of spring, as well as at the request of a large audience and due to the fact that I am not rubber and cannot catch all the animals in the city at the same time, I decided to write a short instruction that will increase the chances of catching distrustful, timid and wild animals.
First of all, you should remember that when you catch a “wild” cat or dog, you are unlikely to succeed the first time, so you should not despair and give up after the 1st, 2nd, 3rd unsuccessful attempt . It may take several weeks, a dozen attempts, a lot of effort and nerves to catch a “wild” animal, or it may even succeed the first time (if you are lucky).
First you need to study the area where the “wild” dog or cat lives. Perhaps there will be baiters or people she trusts, or some kind of confined space, or some feature in the animal's daily routine or habits that you can use to successfully catch.
I advise you not to believe in the fairy tales of some “especially smart” catchers who advise catching wild cats by “covering them with a cage”, and then putting them in a basket, wrapping it with tape, or grabbing a wild cat with your hands and putting it in a carrier - this is all deception and blasphemy: in the 1st case the cat will be 10 meters away from you at the moment when you just lift the cage, in the 2nd case the cat will rip your hands bloody and will be 10 meters away. IN BOTH CASES THESE CATS WILL NOT COME TO YOU ANYMORE!
If you caught a wild cat using these methods, then, most likely, it is either dead, or in deep anesthesia, or trusts you so much that it could not be caught at all.
The best tool for catching cats is a landing net. It's a landing net, not a net! A landing net differs from a landing net in that it is triangular in shape, while a landing net is round (photo 1).
For catching animals, the simplest Chinese landing net is suitable, which can be purchased at any fishing store, of which there are many in all bazaars. The landing net folds and unfolds. When folded, it takes up 1 m in length, and you can easily ride with it on public transport, and when unfolded, it takes up 3-4 m. The wider the landing net, the better. The main thing is that the net is made of thick fishing line (photo 2), and not from fabric or similar material (fabric is much easier to tear) (photo 3).
In principle, you can even catch puppies with a landing net, but not always (my landing net was broken by the first wild puppy, breaking the metal rods on which the net is supported).
Next, you need a strong carrier, something like this (photo 4). The basket is garbage. It is useless to catch someone with it (photo 5).
The fishing technology is as follows:
Although many say that cats see equally well both during the day and at night, I prefer to catch them in the dark because:
1) I noticed that in practice, in the dark, cats do not have time to notice the rapid swing of a fishing gear flying directly at them;
2) if you are lucky enough to catch a cat, then it will hit the ground from side to side in the net, making a roar and releasing its feces in all directions, and then you will drag it along the street in it or put it in a carrier, and, believe me To me, there will most likely be imaginary animal rights activists on your way who will mistake you for a flayer. Well, then there are different scenarios. Therefore, in the dark, the likelihood of being noticed is much less.
In general, you came to the feeding place alone in the evening, or you took the granny who fed, opened the landing net, and poured food for the cat. The most important condition for catching a cat is (. ) TO GO BEHIND HER BACK (. ) - DO NOT TRY TO PLACE A LANDSCAPE ON HER WHILE IN HER FIELD OF VIEW (. ) - tested by dozens of unsuccessful attempts and many wild pregnant cats who have experienced the “joy” of motherhood doomed suicide bombers.
