Prazicide suspension plus for cats: instructions for use, reviews

One of the main procedures that should be carried out on pets is deworming. From the first day, as soon as the kitten appears in the house, it is necessary to have a veterinary first aid kit, which should always contain anthelmintic drugs.

Today we will talk about a complex drug called “Prasicide-suspension plus” for cats. Owners of furry pets know firsthand about this product and leave their reviews about it, which can be read in our article.

Description and composition of the drug

Prazicide Plus for kittens is a sweet suspension of a light yellow hue. Its release form is bottles of 5, 7 and 10 ml. The composition of the drug, based on 1 vial in 5 ml, includes 25 mg of praziquantel and 75 mg of pyrantel. Their action is based on the effect on the neuromuscular tissue of helminths. As a result, the metabolic processes of the parasites are disrupted and they die. Dead helminths are eliminated from the kitten’s body through feces.

Release form

Available in the form of tablets, suspensions and drops on the withers . The drug is selected taking into account the weight and age of the animal. Each release form has its own characteristics and areas of application.

The tablets are intended for adult cats. They have a yellow tint. For convenience, there is a dividing strip in the middle of the tablet. Tablets are available in blisters of 3-6 pieces. In addition to the instructions, the package includes stickers for the veterinary passport.

The suspension is used for adult cats and kittens. Prazicide in the form of a suspension is more convenient when calculating the dosage and feeding the animal. The suspension contains the following components:

  • 1.5 mg praziquantel;
  • 15 mg pyrantel pamoate;
  • 15 mg febantel;
  • Excipients.

The drug has a yellowish tint and a pleasant smell of milk chocolate. Liquid separation is allowed and must be eliminated by vigorous shaking.

For ease of use, the manufacturer includes a dispenser syringe.

There is Prazicide, produced specifically for kittens . The concentration of active substances in it will be significantly lower, but many owners note its low effectiveness. However, when treating children, greater attention should be paid to their safety.

The drug is stored at temperatures from 0 to 250C away from human food and animal feed. The shelf life of the drug is 2 years.

Mode of application

Instructions for use of the drug Prazicide suspension for kittens involve calculating the dose based on the weight of the animal. When calculating the dosage individually for each pet, the following formula is used as a basis: body weight (kg) X 1 ml of suspension. In order for Prazicide to have an effect, it is enough to give it to the kitten once. If there are a lot of parasites, repeat deworming is carried out after 10 days. For preventive purposes, the drug is used once every 3 months.

Parasiticide Plus suspension according to the instructions is given to the kitten in the morning. It is not difficult to use, since it can be added to food or introduced into the animal’s oral cavity with a syringe that is in the package. Before giving the suspension to the kitten, shake the bottle until the liquid reaches a homogeneous mass.

Danger of Invasive Infections

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every second person on the planet is annually infected with one of the types of helminths (the general name for parasitic worms) that circulate in nature, entering the body of humans and animals from soil or water.

Parasites move from one host organism to another, for example, on the legs of insects (mechanically), through the organism of an “intermediate host”, in which they do not reproduce, but only spend one cycle to get to the desired “destination”.

For example, echinococci are tapeworms that parasitize transit in the body of cats and dogs, and humans are an intermediate carrier. Helminths are also transmitted by contact, through food and soil. At the same time, roundworms remain viable in the soil for up to 3 years even at subzero temperatures: they are also resistant to ultraviolet exposure.

Parasitic worms cause irreparable harm to the host body:

  • Feeding on blood causes anemia;
  • Destroys the intestinal walls and thereby causes secondary infections;
  • Ascaris larvae, rising into the bronchi, can cause suffocation in large concentrations;
  • The waste products of helminths cause severe forms of intoxication in the recipient's body.

All of the above is a good reason for regular prevention and treatment of helminthiasis not only in kittens, but also in all inhabitants of the house, especially in children.

Prevention consists of observing standard hygiene standards. Kittens, starting from the age of three weeks, switch to complete independent food, and you need to pay close attention to its quality: do not feed raw foods (without heat treatment), do not give unboiled or untreated water.

Given the excessive curiosity and activity, as well as the interest of children in furry pets, the premises should be thoroughly disinfected regularly: helminth larvae can enter the house with shoes and outerwear, with the help of insects.

Once every three months, kittens need to be given antiparasitic drugs for prevention.

Action of the suspension

The action of Prazicide is aimed at destroying parasites living in the gastrointestinal tract of the animal. Its effectiveness is due to the following pharmacological properties :

  • Rapid absorption into the intestines and blood.
  • Blocking the parasite's enzyme, leading to its paralysis.
  • A complex action aimed at disrupting neuromuscular connections, inhibiting cholyesterase and deteriorating the conductivity of cell membranes, which leads to the death of the parasite.
  • Disruption of the parasite's metabolic processes due to inhibition of fumarate reductase.

Already 3 hours after taking Prazicide, a sufficient amount of prazinquatel is concentrated in the animal’s blood. This component is absorbed into the tissue and excreted through the urinary system within a day. Pyrantel breaks down more slowly, which is why it acts a little later. Excreted in feces.

Reviews from veterinarians

Maria, veterinarian

Based on customer reviews, I can say that Prazicide works effectively. In any case, there were no repeated complaints after its use. I always recommend it: the suspension is a convenient form, moreover, it has a sweetish taste, and animals do not resist too much when administered orally. Suitable for cats and dogs, which is also convenient when there are two shaggy friends in the house. The price is reasonable, which also matters: anthelmintic drugs should be affordable.

Dmitry, veterinarian

If you follow the norm and dosage schedule, there are no problems with the drug. The owners of my patients like that the package contains a syringe dispenser - it is very convenient: the scale on the dispenser allows you to accurately dial in the required volume even for the smallest kittens.

Who does it help and when does it harm?

The drug will be effective if the animal has toxocariasis.
It is advisable to use tablets for cats from the manufacturer Api-San when diagnosing helminthic infestations of the following types in a four-legged pet:

  • toxocariasis;
  • toxascariasis;
  • trichocephalosis;
  • uncinariasis;
  • hookworm;
  • cestodosis

The veterinary drug acts on helminths and causes paralysis of their muscle fibers, as a result, energy metabolism is blocked and the parasite dies. Dead “freeloaders” come out along with feces. But not all cats are allowed to use deworming tablets from the Russian company Api-San. Anthelmintic medicine should not be given to cats less than 90 days old, as well as pregnant cats 3 weeks before the expected date of birth and purrs with personal intolerance to any component of the antiparasitic drug. Another contraindication for purrs taking Api-San products is an infectious disease and a recovery period accompanied by asthenic syndrome.

Pharmacological properties

Prazicide-suspension sweet is a combined drug that has a wide spectrum of activity against all stages of development of round and tapeworms, including Toxocara mystax, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria spp., Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris vulpis, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Diphyllobothrium latum, Dipylidium caninum, Multiceps multiceps, Taenia spp., parasitic in kittens. Praziquantel, which is part of the suspension, increases the permeability of cell membranes to calcium ions and inhibits the parasite enzyme - fumarate reductase, causing spastic muscle contraction, turning into paralysis. The mechanism of action of pyrantel pamoate is to block neuromuscular transmission, disrupt the permeability of cell membranes and inhibit cholinesterase, which leads to paralysis and death of the helminth. When administered orally, praziquantel is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaches its maximum concentration in the blood plasma after 1–3 hours, is distributed in the organs and tissues of the animal and is excreted from the body in the form of metabolites in the urine (up to 80%) within 24 hours. Pyrantel pamoate is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, providing a longer parasitocidal effect directly in the intestine, and is excreted from the body mainly unchanged in feces (93%). The drug is easy to use, has a pleasant taste and is quite well eaten by kittens. In terms of the degree of impact on the body of warm-blooded animals, Prazicide-suspension sweet is classified as a moderately hazardous substance and in recommended doses does not have a locally irritating, sensitizing, teratogenic or embryotoxic effect.

Side effects

In rare cases, allergic reactions are possible in animals sensitive to the components of the drug. In these cases, animals are given symptomatic therapy and prescribed antihistamines in accordance with the instructions for use. With a significant overdose of the drug, animals may experience a depressed state, refusal to feed, excessive salivation, and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. In these cases, detoxification therapy is carried out.

Contraindications

Increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug. It is not recommended to deworm kittens younger than 3 weeks of age, as well as those with infectious diseases, convalescent and malnourished animals. Do not prescribe the suspension simultaneously with piperazine derivatives and other drugs that inhibit cholinesterase.
